“Spartak” celebrated Kovalchuk’s debut with a victory, “Vityaz” and “Dynamo” Minsk played a crazy match.
On December 24, five games were played as part of the KHL regular championship. Let’s briefly summarize each game.
In Omsk, Avangard closed the program of home matches in 2023 with a meeting with Magnitogorsk for the leadership in the East. In the first period, the teams exchanged goals on the power play: Mikhail Belyaev responded to Daniil Vovchenko’s first goal for the Urals. In the second half the “hawks” had the advantage, but not only did they not score, but in the end they conceded: Maxim Karpov converted Magnitogorsk’s second power play of the game. True, there was a referee error here: Artyom Chmykhov was sent to the penalty area for throwing the puck, while the rebound from Daniil Vovchenko’s skate was obvious.

In the third period, the Urals scored the third goal, which turned out to be decisive. In the remaining time, Avangard recovered only one goal thanks to the efforts of Igor Geraskin, but otherwise the Metallurg defense and goalkeeper Ilya Nabokov performed impeccably. Magnitogorsk beat the Hawks on the third try of the season and strengthened their position in first place in the East.

The most productive and dynamic match of the day took place in Balashikha, where Vityaz hosted Dynamo Minsk. The hosts led 2-0 in the 18th minute and controlled the match, but first they let Yegor Borikov into the locker room and then completely failed in the second half, conceding three unanswered goals from the Belarusians during it.
It is not known what Dmitry Ryabykin said to his players during the second break, but in the last twenty minutes Vityaz literally destroyed the opponent. The home team equalized the score, took the lead and in the last minute also hit the empty goal of the Minsk team. 6:4 – the Balashikha club interrupted a long series of defeats and reduced the gap with eighth place in the West, currently occupied by Dinamo, to seven points.

The main event of the Spartak – Kunlun match was, of course, the debut of Ilya Kovalchuk in the current KHL season. The veteran red and white star made himself noticed, he was sent off, scored an own goal and at the end of the match he scored for Spartak 22 years later, into an empty net.

In general, the fight in the match did not work. One of the leaders of the West faced the outsider of the conference without problems, achieving the result already in the first half.

An unexpected result was recorded in the Togliatti match between Lada and Avtomobilist. The strong Volga club collapsed on its field and the unstable Ural team won a rare and confident away victory. At the end of the second half, Maxim Berezin gave the hosts hope to come back, reducing the difference on the scoreboard to a minimum, but already at the beginning of the third half, Sergei Shirokov, who had been playing lately, scored his second goal of the match, and then Avtomobilist only increased the lead.

Severstal and the admiral met at Cherepovets. The visitors opened the scoring in the 13th minute, the home team recovered at the end of the half with a power play and, in the middle of the match, Alexander Skorenov scored the winning goal. Until the end of the match, the Far East team could not overcome Dmitry Shugaev again, and Skorenov scored a double half a minute before the final siren sounded, hitting an empty goal.
