The Christmas holidays have kicked off. The reunions will feature lunches and dinners with family, friends or co-workers. It is also the time to deliver gifts for Christmas or the popular ‘invisible friend’, so if you are one of those who leave everything until the last minute or if you are absent-minded and always lack some essential ingredient for your menu, we recommend that you look at the websites of supermarkets like Mercadona or Carrefour before taking the trip in vain if you need to go buy something this December 25.
However, you should know that supermarkets will remain closed this December 25, Christmas Day. Customers who have forgotten an ingredient to put on the table for the family meal this Christmas or who want to get a loaf of bread will not be able to purchase these products in regular supermarkets. Mercadona, Carrefour, DÍA, Hipercor, Ahorramas and the rest of the food stores will not open to the public. Therefore, if you want to make a last-minute purchase, you can only do so in certain establishments.
The sale of food in stores that are included in gas stations, such as Supercor establishments, are one of the few options that exist this November 25 to buy ingredients. In addition, many of these stores have an oven, so it will be practically the only option to get bread this Christmas day.
The only holidays that close all supermarkets.
Opening on Sundays and holidays is a decision made by each establishment, but there are specific dates on which everyone agrees and maintains the closure of all establishments, regardless of their location. All centers in Spain keep their doors closed this December 25, Christmas Day, next January 1 for the New Year and January 6 for Three Kings Day.
In addition, throughout 2024, there will be other holidays when supermarkets will not open their doors:
May 1, Worker’s Day. December 25, Christmas Day.
