“Most of us are used to using spices as an additive in our dishes. But, in addition to this way of using them, you can also add spices to various drinks, and we are not just referring to coffee. For example, a drink like golden milk is now very popular, in which a condiment plays a very important role.”

What is golden milk?

This name was given to a drink whose main ingredients are milk and turmeric. In several recipes, other spices, butter, honey or sugar are also added. Therefore, the calorie content will be different in each individual case.

On average, one serving is equivalent to 80 kcal.

Golden milk is considered an ancient Indian drink and part of Ayurvedic medicine. The name comes from the Hindu term Haldi Doodh, which means turmeric milk. In India, the drink is widely used to treat fever, cold, cough and boost immunity.

Traditional haldi doodh is simple: half a glass or less of hot milk is mixed with a tablespoon of ground turmeric. As a suitable medium for the spice, simply milk is used, which can also be mixed with hot water.

In the West, additives such as almond milk, coconut oil, spices and sweeteners were invented to make the drink more attractive to consumers.

What are the benefits of the drink?

Milk is beneficial for humans because it contains:

animal protein; calcium; match; potassium; vitamin D and group B vitamins.

All these substances are well absorbed by the body and have a beneficial effect on the state of the skeletal system.

Turmeric comes from the rhizome of the ginger family. Each year it is collected, boiled and dried in hot ovens and then ground into a shiny powder. When fresh, it is very similar to fresh ginger root, but has a deep yellow-orange color visible under beige skin, due to the presence of curcumin.

The spice has a mild, earthy, almost woody flavor, making it suitable for sweet and savory dishes, it is found in curries and is used to dye fabric.

Turmeric has such beneficial properties as:

The presence of antibacterial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. The ability to protect against cardiovascular diseases, type II diabetes mellitus and help in the fight against gastrointestinal problems. Reduce symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. The presence of polyphenols. They have a positive effect on the intestinal microbiome: they are metabolized by various microbes in their lower parts and converted into healthy and digestible metabolites, slowing aging. Turmeric in the drink effectively removes toxins from the body, which cleanses the blood, improves skin condition and prevents age-related changes.

Additionally, turmeric essential oil is used in perfumery.

A special feature of the spice is that the curcumin it contains is poorly absorbed: it is not very bioavailable. One solution to this problem is to consume turmeric with black pepper. It contains piperine, a phytochemical that has been shown to significantly increase the bioavailability of the spice. That’s why pepper is sometimes found in the ingredients list of drinks.

Curcumin, mentioned above, is the active ingredient in turmeric. It is used as a food coloring and is added to yellow mustard and many other prepared foods.

The substance also has a positive effect on human health. For example, it effectively helps in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, regulates blood clotting, is used to combat heartburn, headaches, skin diseases, and can relieve various conditions, from chronic pain to depression.

Therefore, golden milk can be considered not only a popular drink, but also very tasty and healthy. It can be a good complement to the diet, increasing its nutritional value and providing new taste sensations.

Of course, it is not recommended to add sugar and honey to the drink: this will not add any benefits to it, it will only increase the calorie content and become a source of simple carbohydrates. Also, the product should not be used if you have individual intolerance to the components.
