The West Sumatra Regional Police carried out security for the return of demonstrators from Pigogah Nagari Air Bangis. The demonstrators had been carrying out their actions since the previous six days in the city of Padang.

The demonstration aims to ask the West Sumatra Provincial Government not to arrest residents who harvest palm fruit in their fields which are in the Jorong production forest. The demonstrators held demonstrations for six days and defended themselves in front of the Governor’s Office. They demanded to meet directly with the Governor of W Sumatra Mahyeldi Ansarullah.

West Sumatra Regional Police Chief Inspector General Suharyono explained that the demonstration ended safely. The demonstrators have returned to their homes.

“This activity took place safely and under control. We have returned all the people who are sleeping and temporarily staying at the Grand Mosque and are being escorted by PJR, Brimob, Samapta and we will ensure that they arrive safely to West Pasaman,” he said.

Previously, more than a thousand residents of Nagari Air Bangis, West Pasaman Regency, stormed the Governor’s Office of West Sumatra for the second day, Tuesday 1 August 2023. The crowd demanded that the Provincial Government of West Sumatra stop intimidating the Air Bangis people who live in forest areas, including asking the local police freed their two detained comrades.
