Russian scientists have created the ArtInCol artificial intelligence system, which makes it possible to identify invisible neoplasms of the colon. It was developed with the support of the Ministry of Health of Russia at the National Medical Research Center for Coloproctology named after AN Ryzhikh together with the national IT company Alnisoft LLC.

The ArtInCol program, right during an endoscopic examination of the colon (colonoscopy), reveals even the most inconspicuous neoplasms, small changes in the intestinal mucosa that may go unnoticed during the medical examination. Sometimes these changes are easy to confuse with normal irregularities.

But artificial vision allows the doctor to pay attention to those small tumors that may be inaccessible to the human eye. In this case, it is not only possible to make a diagnosis, but, if possible, immediately remove the tumors through a colonoscope.

– Our Center actively participates in the initiative of the Ministry of Health to put this latest technology into practice. I am confident that this solution will help endoscopists identify tumors more effectively during colonoscopy. This will facilitate their work and, most importantly, will ultimately reduce morbidity and mortality from colorectal cancer,” explained the director of the National Medical Research Center for Coloproctology. A. Ryzhikh Sergei Achkasov.

In Russia, colorectal cancer ranks fifth in terms of incidence for both sexes, and also ranks second in the mortality structure in men and women. According to the World Health Organization, colorectal cancer accounts for approximately 10% of cancer incidence in the world: more than 1 million cases of cancer are recorded each year.

Colonoscopy in Russia is performed free of charge, under the compulsory medical insurance policy, at the second stage of the clinical examination (if a predisposition is identified or, for example, blood is detected in the stool). And the universal home device created with its software can be integrated into any endoscopic rack in any hospital.

According to experts from the Russian Ministry of Health, the introduction of new technologies in the field of medical imaging can improve the effectiveness of diagnosing colon diseases. This means it is expected to lead to a reduction in colon cancer morbidity and mortality.

ONLY NUMBERS

Currently Roszdravnadzor has registered 24 medical products with artificial intelligence. Of them, 17 software products are included in the national software equipment registry.
