The current season in the VTB United League is not like the previous ones. The championship began without a clear leader and, as the regular season progressed, it became clear that almost all teams could emerge victorious from the confrontation.

This also applies to Parma, which is already in its second season under the leadership of Evgeniy Pashutin. At the moment, the Perm team has already won the same number of games as in the entire first phase of last season.

“Championship” has prepared material about a club from one of the cities with the most basketball in Russia.

A little story

In Perm people love basketball very much and everyone knows it. The city considers this to be one of the oldest sports in the Kama region. According to open sources, basketball began to be played in Perm in the 20s of the 20th century. Local newspapers wrote that in the spring of 1923, at the opening of the summer sports season, the Perm yacht club team defeated its university rivals. In 1928, the first international match took place in Perm, in which the city’s basketball team defeated the French team.

Of course, most of Perm’s basketball memories are associated with Ural Great, which in 2001 and 2002 won the Russian championship against CSKA and UNICS, respectively. The history of this team, which ceased to exist in 2009, definitely deserves a separate article.

The current Perm team was founded in 2012, and now under its leadership there is a youth team that participates in the VTB United Youth League, and the teams are also represented in the youth championship and in 3×3 basketball.

During this period, Parma twice won the Russian Cup, became a bronze medalist of the Super League, and also participated in European cups. In 2016, the team joined the list of VTB United League participants and since 2021 has consistently participated in the tournament playoffs.

What are the prospects now?

In the summer of 2022, the Parma management invited Evgeniy Pashutin, who has very rich work experience, to the position of head coach. Basically, he started building the team from scratch. In the first season, not everything went well, especially in the first stage, but then the specialist corrected the situation and led the team to the playoffs.

Before the start of the current championship, the team was significantly renewed and, most importantly, successfully found foreign players. Their squad was complemented by CJ Brice, Richard Solomon and BJ Johnson, who all joined the squad very well. In addition, Russian basketball players were signed: Stanislav Ilnitsky, Dmitry Khalturin and Ruslan Abdulbasirov. Last season’s leader, Isaiah Reese, also had his contract extended.

The championship for Pashutin’s team started badly: seven defeats in 10 games. However, since November the Perm team has achieved six victories in a row. This streak continued after the match against CSKA, which took place at the legendary Molot sports center on December 20.

The Permians sensationally inflicted on the military team only the second defeat of the season and, most importantly, the result reflects the essence of the game. “Parma” was really better than the Moscow team, they were not afraid to attack through a serious defense and at the same time worked intensively in their own half.

Parma is ready, ready to take a step forward. In the new history of Perm basketball, the local VTB United League team never made it out of the first round. But this season everything can change, especially in the equal conditions in which the clubs find themselves.

Pashutin’s team has no authority, only sporting arrogance and self-confidence. This is already enough to fight on equal terms with the favorites and even give them a surprise.
