The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) related to tourism in Spain, measured through final tourism demand, has reached 155,946 million euros in 2022. This figure represents 11.6% of GDP, with an increase of three points percentages compared to 2021, but it is a figure that is far from 12.6% of GDP in 2019, according to data released by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

In 2021, tourism activity reached 94,127 million euros, while in 2019 it was 157,355 million euros, representing 12.6% of GDP and registering 2.6 million jobs in the sector. Regarding employment generated by tourism activity, it reached 1.9 million jobs last year, which represented 9.3% of total employment in the economy, five tenths more than in 2021.

According to the INE, 2019 remains the year with the highest tourism employment, with 2.67 million jobs, 12.7% of the total economy. In 2021, this type of jobs reached 1.7 million, representing 8.8% of the total.

For its part, the component with the greatest weight in domestic tourism consumption in 2022 was inbound tourism spending, with 54.1% of the total, 13.2 percentage points more than the previous year. For its part, the final demand for tourism association increased by 58.6%, in volume terms, in 2022.

A record of 2023

Regarding what can be expected for this year, which we are about to conclude, in terms of tourists and tourist spending, the INE anticipates a new record, receiving 74.7 million international travelers between January and November 2023, which represents 0.2% more than those who arrived in the same period of 2019 and 18.2% more than in 2022, according to data published by the INE. Specifically, in the month of November a total of 5,324 million foreign passengers arrived by air, 33.5% more than in the same month last year and 6.8% less than pre-pandemic.

In terms of tourist spending, tourists who visited Spain until October spent close to 95 billion euros, 16% above 2019.
