The State Department informed a 61-year-old American that he received US citizenship by mistake – Rossiyskaya Gazeta

During a routine passport renewal, the State Department discovered that Sobhani, despite being born in Washington and having lived in the United States his entire life, was ineligible for citizenship because his father was an Iranian diplomat.

According to Sobhani himself, this news surprised him. He noted that he lived his entire life in the United States, paid taxes, voted for presidents and worked for the benefit of the people of Northern Virginia.

“And after 61 years they tell you: ‘There has been a mistake, you are no longer an American citizen.’ This is truly shocking,” RIA Novosti quotes the American. The State Department suggested that the doctor apply for permanent residency instead of citizenship.

Please note that in the United States there is the “law of the soil”, a legal term that guarantees the right to obtain citizenship to all persons born on US soil and in US jurisdiction. The exception is the children of foreign diplomats, who enjoy legal immunity.
