The King and Queen Figure Awards have entered the final stretch! There are the last few days to vote for the candidate to whom I would give this title last year. All the finalists spent the year 2023 brilliantly and, in a sense, dramatically. But everyone can cast their vote for only one candidate.
I have made my choice: my vote is for Evgeniy Semenenko.
In 2023, Zhenya entered as the reigning Russian champion in men’s single skating. It would seem that in current conditions, while Russian athletes are excluded from international competitions, this is the highest point of development. But winning this title did not prevent him from continuing to develop, seeking new motivations and delighting viewers with fresh and bright images.
At this year’s show program tournament, Zhenya presented an impressive act with a doll. K-pop is not a new subject for him, but that music… in which it feels as natural as possible. The experiments concerned the equipment: five people helped place a homemade doll in the middle of the room, and all this in complete darkness, so that the viewer did not notice anything.

In the summer there was a more surprising experiment in terms of demonstrations. Who could imagine Zhenya Semenenko in the mythical image of a faun and in the choreography of Vaslav Nijinsky? But Alexey Nikolaevich Mishin saw this and his student willingly accepted a new adventure.
Over the years of his adult career, Zhenya has time and again shown a new side of himself. Do you want something classic and sublime? Please, Albinoni’s Adagio. “Finding the trigger is the biggest challenge.” We went through all the stages of staging “Clown” with Semenenko.
Semenenko not only plays with different images, but also continues to develop technically. For a long time the quadruple loop was not possible in competitions, but eventually he conquered it too, even with big bonuses from the judges. At the “Edge of Kurai” tournament, Semenenko not only performed a senior quad in the free skate, but also performed a series with four quadruple jumps for the first time.
Constant improvement also brings rewards. This season, Semenenko has won gold at the Russian Grand Prix in Ufa and silver on the Kazan stage. In March, Zhenya could have clinched a medal in the Grand Prix final, but was less than one point shy of bronze.
In parallel with figure skating, Zhenya’s other life passes: in anatomy notes and in practice in the hospital. It is already the third year that she combined the incompatible and so far everything is going well, whether investing in training or studying.

This is probably the main thing that captivates Zhenya as an athlete. He has other options, but he still chooses figure skating because he has it in his heart and it is very valuable.
