Which will take place?

This year, for the first time since 2020, the competition will not be held in North America, but in Europe; The tournament will be held in Gothenburg, Sweden. Initially, this city was supposed to become the host of the 2022 World Cup, but due to the current coronavirus pandemic, it was decided to hold it in Canada and Gothenburg was given the right to host the 2024 World Cup.

The group A matches will be played at the Scandinavium Stadium, with a capacity for just over 12,000 spectators, and the group B matches will be played at the Frölundaborg Arena, with a capacity for 7,600 fans.

Tournament format

The format of the tournament remains unchanged: 10 teams are divided into two groups and play a preliminary round in the round-robin system. Three points are awarded for a victory in regulation time, two points for a victory in overtime or penalty kicks, one point for a loss outside of regulation time, and 0 points for a loss in regulation time. The first four teams in each group advance to the quarterfinals and will play according to the crossover system. Teams that finish fifth in the groups will play each other to survive up to two wins.

Before the semi-finals, there will be a reclassification based on the results of the group round: ranking, number of points, goal difference, number of goals scored, ranking before the start of the tournament. The highest ranked team will play against the lowest ranked team in the semi-finals, the second and third ranked team will play against each other.

In the event of a tie in the group round, there will be a five-minute overtime in a three-on-three format until the first goal is scored, followed by a shootout of five shots per side (or more if there is no winner).

In the quarterfinals, semifinals and bronze medal match, extra time will last 10 minutes or until the first goal is scored; In the final, extra time will last 20 minutes. The playoff format is three-on-three.

Unusual ban

On November 1, 2023, the Swedish police decided to completely ban the use of bags at all major events. This also applies to the upcoming World Junior Championship in Gothenburg, the IIHF press service reports. The ban is intended to increase overall safety at public events.

The restriction applies to all types of bags, including small bags and totes.

Exceptions may be made for medical reasons, but such bags will be checked by qualified personnel before entering the arena.

A medical reason for being able to take your bag to the arena means that the bag is designed to hold medical equipment or contains essential medications that must be taken during the event. An additional condition is that such medications cannot be carried into the stadium in the spectator’s pocket.
