Reason for the protests in Dublin

Tranquil Ireland, once a model of pastoral idyll, has been rocked by the largest anti-immigrant protests in history. Over the course of the night, Dublin has become a real battlefield with burned-out cars, looted shops and clashes with the police.

According to the Irish broadcaster RTE, it all started on Thursday when, for a still unknown reason, a 50-year-old man attacked passers-by with a knife and injured four of them, including three children. The criminal was arrested with the help of concerned citizens who were passing by. In addition, one of the heroes was a food delivery man on a scooter, by the way, a migrant from Brazil, who literally hit the criminal with his helmet. The attack took place at half past two in the afternoon in Parnell Square, one of the historically important places in the Irish capital.

Police did not mention the attacker’s nationality, but information appeared online that the suspect was a migrant from Algeria. Law enforcement has not directly denied it, but affirms that the detainee’s actions “are not related to terrorism.”

According to Reuters, rumors about the criminal’s nationality spread throughout the capital and, at 6 p.m., groups of protesters began to gather in Parnell Square, although the crime scene was cordoned off by police. The crowd, which included about 50 far-right activists, began destroying everything around them.

Pogroms and riots in Ireland on the night of November 23-24, 2023

Despite the presence of riot units, protesters began throwing whatever they had on hand at law enforcement officers and even attempted to launch fireworks in their direction. Amid the noise, unknown individuals robbed several nearby stores.

A video posted on social media on Thursday showed a group of men violently clashing with police officers in Dublin and setting a police car on fire. The images also show a man holding a sign that says “Irish Lives Matter” and anti-immigrant slogans such as “Get them away” can be heard. [из страны]”

As a result, central Dublin, including the main transport artery, O’Connell Street, was blocked and public transport stopped. At 9pm the rioters began to disperse, but there is still increased police patrols on the streets of the Irish capital. According to the British tabloid The Mirror, Irish police have arrested at least 34 people.

The response of the Irish authorities to the anti-immigrant riots

The key question now remains how Irish authorities should respond to what happened. The current pogrom has become the largest and most brutal action against immigrants in the entire history of the country. Although the large right-wing parties that demand the fight against immigrants are not represented in the political life of the republic, residents are increasingly concerned about the growing number of immigrants in the country.

Per capita, the number of immigrants in Ireland has reached one of the highest levels in the EU, thanks in large part to refugees from Ukraine. Since the beginning of the Northern Military District, about 100 thousand people have arrived in the republic from Nezalezhnaya, which, taking into account a population of 5.3 million, is an impressive figure. As a result, the period between April 2022 and April 2023 became the second with the highest number of “guests” arriving in the country in the last 70 years.
