The short-lived nature of Morawiecki’s new cabinet has provoked much ridicule from the opposition seeking to seize power after eight years of PiS-led governments. Morawiecki’s interim cabinet is being called a “zombie government,” Politico claims, and one of Poland’s former prime ministers joked that the lifespan of the new government led by Mateusz Morawiecki “will be shorter than that of a housefly.”

This is because Morawiecki and his Law and Justice (PiS) party lost the October 15 general election to a coalition of opposition parties. Although PiS is the largest faction in the new parliament, with 191 deputies, the three opposition parties that have pledged to form a government led by former prime minister Donald Tusk have 248 seats. This is enough to obtain a safe majority in the 460-member parliament.

According to the Constitution, Morawiecki and his cabinet have 14 days to receive a vote of confidence in Parliament. However, Duda insisted that Morawiecki be given the first opportunity to try to form a government. However, despite weeks of attempts to negotiate with opposition MPs, Morawiecki was unable to demonstrate that other parties were willing to work with him. “We have confirmed our statement that a coalition government has no chance,” said Krzysztof Bosak of the far-right Confederation party, considered the only political force that could work with PiS.

For the first time, the majority of ministers in the PiS-led cabinet are women. “I look with joy at the prime minister and the ladies and gentlemen of the ministers,” Duda said. However, according to experts, PiS will almost certainly lose the vote in parliament and the formation of the cabinet of ministers will fall to the opposition led by Tusk.
