The current coach of the Russian national team, Valery Karpin, has experience working in Spain. From August 2014 to February 2015 he managed Mallorca, which played in the second strongest division. We tell you what the fate of the footballers who then played with Karpin was like.

How Karpin financed the Spanish cycling team:

Karpin was the president of the cycling team for two years. After his departure: doping and bankruptcy

Marco Asensio, left winger

The most star player among those Karpin worked with in Mallorca. Asensio already cost 3.5 million euros and was the most expensive player on the team. And this at 19 years old! Although it must be remembered that Asensio played on loan for Mallorca and the rights to him belonged to Real. Interestingly, with Karpin, Marko scored five goals and provided six assists. In October 2014, the winger was even recognized as the best footballer of the month in the Second Division. After the Russian left, the Spaniard scored only 3 (1+2) points through the goal+pass system. Marco would later become a three-time Champions League winner, three-time La Liga winner and Spanish Cup winner. In addition, he won the Club World Cup four times, the European Super Cup three times and the Spanish Super Cup twice. Since 2023 he has been playing for PSG.

Agus García, central defender

13 games, one goal: these are the statistics that García achieved with Karpin. At the beginning of the season he was a first-team player, but then he increasingly sat on the reserve list and failed. Agus left Mallorca in 2015 and started traveling the world. He played in the United States, Denmark, Cyprus and India. His last place of work was the ATK club, for which he played in the 2019/2020 season. By the way, it was with him that he became champion of India.

Kasim Adams, central defender

The African footballer started playing in Mallorca with Karpin. In the first five rounds of Segunda, Adams was never included in the team and then established himself in the team. Under Karpin, Kasim played 18 games and scored two goals, but immediately lost his starting spot after the Russian left. In the second half of the season, the African only entered the field twice. Subsequently, Adams played on loan for Young Boys, with whom he became Swiss champion (2017/2018 season). In 2018, the defender ended up at Hoffenheim, where he plays to this day. He was on loan a couple of times (Fortuna Dusseldorf and Basel), but this season he did not play a single game. Since 2017 he has played for the Ghana national team (14 matches, two goals).

Nicola Gulan, defensive midfielder

The midfielder came to Mallorca as a Serbian champion (he won the title with Partizan). With Karpin he received enough playing time. The same thing happened after the change of coach. It is true that the Serbian stayed in Spain for only one season. After that, my career included trips to Belgium, Israel, Sweden and Malta. Since September 2023 he represents the Kolubara club, which plays in the second strongest division in Serbia.

Enric Saborit, central defender

Saborit spent the 2014/2015 season on loan at Mallorca. The boy came from Athletic, but he did not always make it into the lineup with Karpin. Under the direction of the Russian coach he played nine games, after the change of coach – seven. Since 2018 he has played for Maccabi Tel Aviv, with which he has accumulated a good collection of trophies. Saborit is a two-time champion of Israel, winner of the Israel Cup and two-time winner of the Super Cup. In addition, he played in the Champions League (qualifier), Europa League and Conference League.

João Victor, defensive midfielder

Since 2020, this Brazilian has settled in India, where he plays for the Hyderabad club. Together with him he was proclaimed national champion in 2022. As for the period in Mallorca, with Karpin Viktor he received regular training and from matchday 9 of the Second Division he left with the captain’s armband. Especially memorable for the Brazilian was the match against Barcelona’s second team (3-3). In this match he scored 2 (1 + 1) points through the goal + pass system. After leaving Mallorca (summer 2015), he played in Cyprus, Qatar and Greece.

José Luis Martí, defensive midfielder

When Karpin ended up in Mallorca, Marty was already 40 years old. Despite his advanced age, the midfielder played 13 games under the direction of the Russian coach. At the beginning of the season, the veteran wore the captain’s armband and even scored 2 (1+1) points through the goal+pass system. After Karpin was fired, Marty was only allowed on the field twice. At the end of the 2014/2015 season he retired. It must be said that Marty achieved great success as part of Sevilla. Together with her he won the UEFA Cup twice, a Spanish Cup, a national Super Cup and a UEFA Super Cup each. After he finished his career, Marty became a coach. He worked with Deportivo, Leganés, Girona and Sporting de Gijón. It is true that the Spaniard has been unemployed since the spring of 2022.

Manuel Arana, right winger

In 2014, the market value of this Spaniard was 1 million euros and at that time he was one of the most expensive players in Mallorca. Under the leadership of Karpin, Arana played 18 matches and showed good results in the second division. He scored six goals and had one assist. Until 2016, Manuel played exclusively in his homeland, and then went to conquer other countries (Australia, India, Gibraltar). He achieved the greatest success with the Europa club. In the 2018/2019 season, Arana helped the team win the Gibraltar Cup. He retired from the race in the summer of 2020.

Abdón Prats, center forward

Karpin, as a rule, released Prats as a replacement. However, the forward played 14 games and scored two goals. It is true that in January 2015 the boy left as a free agent for Tenerife. He then played for Mirandés and Racing, and in 2017 he returned to Mallorca. By the way, he still plays there to this day.

The complete broadcast of the Spanish Primera match and the best moments are available on Okko.

Prats has been very effective this season. He comes on as a substitute but scores every 62 minutes. The mustachioed Spaniard has seven goals in 10 games in all tournaments.

Mikael Pereira, right winger

The Frenchman played regularly with Karpin, but never scored a single goal. But at least he had three assists. In general, in the 2014/2015 season, Pereira scored only one goal, although he played 36 matches. Pereira left Mallorca in 2016 and has since played in Turkey, Romania, Poland and Greece. He now plays for the Kallithea club, which represents the Greek second division. Pereira is a two-time Romanian champion (2019/2020, 2020/2021) with CFR Cluj.

Marko Scepovic, center forward

In 2014, Shchepovich took to the field regularly and accumulated good statistics – six goals in 14 games. But in 2015, the Serbian stopped even appearing on the list and in February he returned early from his loan to Olympiacos. It is curious that a few days later, Marco arrived in Russia: he was rented by Akhmat. It is true that this experience cannot be considered successful. For six months, the Serbian only had seven minutes of play.

In 2018, Shchepovich became champion of Hungary with Videoton, and in 2021, champion of Cyprus with Omonia. He now plays for the Serbian club Novi Pazar, which plays in the elite division.

What Karpin said after the Russian national team’s match in Volgograd:

“I don’t know why I don’t sing the Russian anthem. But I sing “Valera”. Not everyone is happy with Karpin after Cuba
