In the Volgograd region, amendments to the law on renaming Volgograd have been prepared – Rossiyskaya Gazeta

The document talks about the possibility of holding a referendum on changing the name from Volgograd to Stalingrad.

“If a proposal to change the name of the administrative center of the Volgograd region, the Regional Duma, is accepted for consideration within five calendar days from the date of adoption of the resolution on the acceptance of the proposal for consideration consideration, publishes said resolution, which also contains information on the possibility of implementing the initiative to hold a regional referendum,” the draft says.

The amendments also set the conditions for renaming other settlements in the region through a referendum. If approved, the Volgograd Regional Duma will send the documents, as well as calculations of the costs necessary to implement the proposal, to the authorized federal executive body for consideration.

In 1925, the city of Tsaritsyn was renamed Stalingrad, and in 1961 it was renamed Volgograd. On January 30, 2013, the Volgograd City Duma decided to establish the name “Stalingrad” as a symbolic name during public events held several times a year.
