Throughout the legendary Dragon Ball series, fans have debated whether Gohan, Goku’s eldest son, could have taken the lead role in place of his father. However, several fundamental reasons prevented Gohan from becoming the permanent hero some had hoped for.

The first and most obvious reason lies in Gohan’s very nature. Unlike Goku, whose passion for fighting and constant desire to improve define his character, Gohan does not share the same penchant for fighting. This fact is clearly revealed during his epic battle against Cell when Gohan admits that he only fights when necessary. This inherent lack of enthusiasm for fighting becomes a major obstacle in Gohan’s path to taking on the central role that Goku has played throughout the sagas.

Although Gohan proved to be an incredibly powerful fighter, his peaceful nature and reluctance to engage in direct confrontation limited his ability to be the undisputed leader that Goku represents. At its core, the series revolves around the concept of overcoming and fighting against adversity, elements that resonate deeply with Goku’s character.

While Gohan had standout moments and made significant contributions to Akira Toriyama’s storyline, Goku’s lack of inherent desire to fight prevented him from fully taking over the lead role. While Gohan shines in his own right, it is his penchant for peace and scholarship rather than passionate fighting that has cemented Goku’s central position as the unrivaled protagonist in the vast Dragon Ball universe.
