In 1955, on the outskirts of Vladimir, a site of people who lived 26-30 thousand years ago was discovered, where it was planned to build a plant: while digging a hole, workers found strange bones… As a result, archaeological excavations The founding of a settlement called Sungir, after the river that flows here, lasted from 1956 to 1977. Two two-level burials were found here, including a man between 35 and 40 years old and two teenagers in ornate clothing, as well as dozens of thousands of objects.

The Institute of Archeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences stated that the material obtained during excavations became the object of research not only of archaeologists, but also of geologists, anthropologists, paleogeneticists, paleozoologists, palynologists and climatologists. From the distribution of jewelry found on the skeletons of buried people, the approximate appearance of the clothing was reconstructed; anthropologists created three-dimensional reconstructions of the external appearance of those buried; Archaeologists were able to determine the details of the funerary rite, and analysis of the bone material allowed anthropologists not only to identify details of the physical appearance of the buried person, but also to establish some of the circumstances of the death of an adult man.

By studying the cultural layer, bone remains of animals, spores and pollen of fossil plants, scientists discovered that the climate of this area at that time was close to the modern one and that the animal and plant worlds were rich and diverse. And only with the beginning of the last cooling period, Valdai, people left these places.

The permanent exhibition presents objects of archeology and paleontology.

The collection of the Vladimir-Suzdal Museum-Reserve contains more than 70 thousand objects found in Sungir, including those of world importance. But previously the museum did not have a permanent exhibition dedicated to this unique archaeological site; Occasionally only temporary exhibitions were opened.

Now, thanks to the financial support of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation and philanthropists, this deficiency has been corrected. The permanent exhibition presents almost 250 objects of archeology and paleontology, including the famous Sungir horses carved from mammoth ivory, grooved discs, ritual staffs, numerous decorations, tools and hunting weapons. In addition, according to the deputy general director of the museum, Oleg Ryzhkov, thanks to interactive elements, the exhibited exhibits are combined with modern research technology; For example, the use of computer technology allows us to see what the inhabitants of Sungir were like. what they wore and how they hunted.

The museum hopes that the next step in popularizing Sungir will be the creation of an archaeological park on the site of a late Paleolithic human settlement. A competition is currently being held for the best design of this park.

Nikolai Makarov, director of the Institute of Archeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences:

– Many archaeologists attended the opening of this exhibition with a strange feeling: we know Sungir well, what else can be seen here, what can be shown? And we saw a completely new exhibition, in which the academic component and deep historical meaning are skillfully combined with modern museum technologies, making this era understandable and close to us. Sungir is probably the most famous Paleolithic monument in Russia and known throughout the world. It belongs to world history, because this is still a period when there were no countries and peoples, this is the initial development of Eurasia, and Vladimir was lucky that this monument, which, in general, has no direct connection with the modern Vladimir region. , ended almost at the city limits and attaches special importance to Vladimir on the world map.
