Iran’s state media IRNA reported that thousands of people gathered at the holy shrine of Imam Reza (AS) to pray for the good health of Ibrahim Raisi on Sunday (May 19) evening after the news of the president’s helicopter crashing in East Azerbaijan province. This day was the birth anniversary of the eighth Shia Imam Reza (a.s.).
On Sunday, the helicopter carrying the Iranian president crashed in the border area of Iran’s East Azerbaijan province. Raisi was accompanied by the country’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdullahian, Governor of East Azerbaijan Province Malek Rahmati and several other senior officials.
The media Al Jazeera reported in a report that the rescue work is being disrupted due to the inclement weather. The rescue team could not make contact with anyone on board the helicopter. Eight ambulances have been kept ready at the scene. Besides, the area is being monitored by drones. 40 rescue teams have been deployed to search for the missing helicopter.

Iran’s Interior Minister Ahmed Vahidi said on Iranian state television that it would take time to reach the crash site due to bad weather and fog in the area.
Meanwhile, citing an Iranian official, the news agency Reuters says that the lives of Raisi and Hossein Amirabdullahian are feared to be in danger in this accident.
The official said on condition of anonymity.
