Pedro Piqueras says goodbye to almost 50 years of journalistic career and 17 years at Telecinco. This December 21 will be the last time we hear that: “Good evening and welcome to Informativos Telecinco.” A reference in journalism, radio and television, who already has plans for the future, leaves the dishes. Traveling, giving lectures, teaching classes and who knows whether to participate in documentaries, since he has offers on the table, as he himself has acknowledged.

Before this long period at Telecinco, Piqueras went to TVE, where he presented the second edition of Telediario (1998). Five years later he signed for Antena 3 (1993), where he worked as director of Noticias, combining it with Espejo Público (1996). He also worked on A plena Luz (2002) and Siete Días, Siete Noches (2006).

But his first steps in the world of journalism were not taken in front of the cameras, but rather in front of the microphones. He worked at Radio Exterior (1977) and Radio Nacional de España (1986), to which he returned in 2004 until he signed for Telecinco. His successor on the Mediaset network will be Carlos Franganillo, who like him, comes from TVE.

Just a month ago, the TVE Archive rescued Pedro Piqueras’ debut on television for Mañaneros, the La 1 program. It was in 1977, more than a decade before presenting the Telediario. At the time, he was 22 years old and had just arrived at the network. He sported long hair and a thick beard.

His first appearance was in a report made by the Castilla-La Mancha territorial center of RTVE. New voices were broadcast in Old Lands. And he didn’t appear talking, but rather playing the guitar. In addition, Piqueras was in charge of providing the music for the report.

He will always be remembered for his professionalism and rigor in leading all the programs he has presented and directed. Furthermore, he was at the forefront of one of the most relevant moments in politics in Spain, when in 2016 he moderated the only Four Debate between the candidates for the presidency of the Government: Mariano Rajoy, Pedro Sánchez, Pablo Iglesias and Albert Rivera. A career that has allowed him to build a ‘real estate empire’.

At 68 years old, his retirement is well assured. Beyond the salary that he was receiving, close to half a million euros per year, throughout his life he has known how to invest it in brick and has acquired at least a dozen properties. The last two, at the end of 2022: one in Vitoria and another on Paseo Pintor Rosales in Madrid. In the same district of Chamberí he has two other residences, one of them more than 200 meters and seven rooms. As if that were not enough, he acquired a studio near the Santiago Bernabéu in 2019, although he has lived in the Madrid mountains since 2013.

Of course, he has a home in Albacete, his hometown. And on the islands, in a tourist area of ​​Tenerife, where she has a 70 square meter apartment in an urbanization with a swimming pool and access to the beach. But also outside of Spain, since he bought a home in Budapest, which he considers his second residence. “Here I disconnect, turn off my phone, read a book and go unnoticed,” he revealed in ‘Viajeros Cuatro’.
