Filming began on Thursday afternoon on the fourth floor of the Faculty of Philosophy building at Charles University on Jan Palach Square in Prague. Students and teachers took refuge in the faculty classrooms, barricading themselves in them. Prague rescue services reported a large number of dead and injured.

“Eleven were killed, including the attacker, ten were seriously injured, six suffered moderate injuries and up to ten suffered minor injuries. The figures may still change,” the service clarified, according to the Czech publication Idnes. Judging by the photographs that appeared on social networks, a young man with an automatic weapon was walking down the hallway of the faculty. Other images show people running out of the building with their hands up. The students barricaded in the faculty told how they saw the fall of a girl who tried to save herself by jumping from the balcony.

The university building was evacuated and the police searched it to ensure that there were no accomplices of the criminal. Czech Interior Minister Vit Rakušan arrived at the scene of the incident.

It later turned out that the Prague University shooter was named David Kozak. He committed suicide when dozens of police cars arrived at the scene. When chaos broke out, people fled Prague’s old town and ran across the famous Charles Bridge. Leo Meníndez from Mexico told ABC News: “We started hearing police sirens and ambulances coming from the Charles Bridge. Then we heard gunshots and started running.”

Prime Minister Petr Fiala announced his return to Prague. “Due to the tragic events that occurred at the Faculty of Philosophy in Prague, I have canceled my work program in Olomouc and am returning to Prague,” he said. Authorities urged people to stay home and said that “the entire Jan Palach Square and its surroundings are completely closed.”
