The third Yiddish language festival opened in the Jewish Autonomous Region – Rossiyskaya Gazeta

“The first settlers who came to build autonomy were native speakers of this unique language. And for many years, Yiddish was preserved here as a second language for everyday communication. Today, unfortunately, it is becoming a cultural highlight of the autonomy. “But we are doing everything possible to return the popular language to love,” said the governor of the Jewish Autonomous Region, Rostislav Goldstein.

He stressed the importance of preserving the national language and pointed out that in the region it is taught to children in kindergarten, in the high school with a Jewish component and in the Sunday school of the Freud community of Birobidzhan. In addition, Yiddish lives on signs with street names and in the names of bus stops, in the pages of the local newspaper Birobidzhaner Stern. Autonomy artists sing songs in this language, perform on the stage of their “homeland” and visit other cities in Russia and abroad.

As part of the annual festival, various master classes, conferences, exhibitions, shows and concerts will be held in all regions of the Jewish Autonomous Region. The detailed program is published on the official website of the regional government.
