Felipe Morenés Botín, son of the president of Banco Santander, Ana Botín, will join the board of directors of Santander México as an independent and alternate board, as Europa Press has learned from financial sources. The figure of alternate director is a figure exclusive to Mexico. On the boards of directors, in addition to the regular directors, there are substitute directors, who can attend board meetings but do not have the right to vote if the regular director is present. The news was announced this Friday by ‘El Confidencial’.

The election of Morenés Botín has been made following the recommendation of his appointment by an independent advisor. The new director of Santander México had never been linked to the entity chaired by Ana Botín. She began her career in the investment banking area of UBS, where she worked between 2008 and 2013. She later joined the Lone Star fund, where she remained until 2017.

After his time at the fund, he founded his own firm, Stoneshield Capital. At the end of 2021 he founded Delta Tech Investments. He has a degree in Political Economy from Georgetown University. With this appointment, the board of directors of Santander México has around 24 people, including regular and alternate directors. In addition to the CEO of Mexico, Felipe García Ascencio, the board also includes the CEO of Santander Spain, Ángel Rivera, and the new global head of retail banking, Daniel Barriuso.
