when we celebrate
Lawyer’s Day is traditionally celebrated on December 3, according to the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation No. 130 of February 4, 2008. This is an official professional holiday, but there is no day off. This year, lawyers will celebrate on Sunday.
History
The traditions of the holiday date back to the 19th century, when on November 20, 1864, Emperor Alexander II established judicial statutes. This is the name of the laws that became the basis of the Judicial Reform. This event led to the emergence of the legal profession in Russia, because the principle of adversarial law in courts had not previously been established. In addition, the reform ensured the equality of all people before the law, the transparency of judicial procedures, introduced the institution of juries and at the same time created a system of first instance courts. All this together made it possible to build one of the most effective and modern legal systems in the world. In addition, this event gave rise to the activity of many outstanding lawyers, whose names even today every first-year law student knows: from Koni to Plevako.
In the Soviet Union, this holiday was not given due attention. After the 1917 revolution, legal education was generally considered unnecessary. After all, it was assumed that in the process of class struggle the relations between commodities and money would cease to exist, as would state institutions. If so, lawyers will have nothing to do, so it was decided to abolish law schools. The Bolsheviks did not realize their mistake until 1942, when the Law Faculty of the Moscow State University system was restored to its previous form.
The Moscow Regional Duma decided to once again grant Russian lawyers their special day when in 2008 it put forward an initiative to include Lawyer’s Day in the calendar of national holidays. The lawyers argued over the ideal date, but finally settled on the historically correct day: December 3 (November 20 according to the old calendar) to emphasize the continuity of generations. This year the festival is celebrated for the sixteenth time.
Traditions
The main and most anticipated event in professional circles is the awarding of the “Lawyer of the Year” award. This highest legal prize is awarded annually on December 3, in accordance with the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation of October 8, 2009 No. 1129. The laureates are awarded on behalf of the Russian Bar Association. The award is a recognition of the services of highly qualified lawyers to society and the State. It is awarded in five categories: “For contribution to legal sciences”, “Human rights activities”, “Legal education”, “Development of legislation”, “Legal education and training”. In addition, in 2020 a special nomination “For the protection of social and labor rights of citizens” was created. Over the years, the winners have been people such as EP Gubin, EA Sukhanov, AI Bastrykin and other prominent figures in the country’s legal community.
Law schools hold conferences, meetings with former graduates, and practical classes. On Lawyer’s Day, the professional community encourages even greater efforts to develop professional skills.
Similar holidays
A legal education gives you the opportunity to apply yourself in very different areas of activity. After receiving a diploma, some become investigators, judges or prosecutors, and others become lawyers, notaries and teachers. This is why confusion often occurs, because most of these professions have separate holidays. Therefore, Lawyer’s Day, which falls on December 3, should not be confused with:
Prosecutor’s Day: January 14 Legal Services Specialist Day: March 29 Notary Day: April 26 Defense Day: May 31 Judicial Worker’s Day: December 5 Investigation Day: July 25
Lawyers are also congratulated all over the world. In Mexico it is called “Lawyer’s Day” and is celebrated on July 12. India celebrates Lawyer’s Day on December 3, remembering lawyer and independence fighter Rajendra Prasad. But in the United States there is no separate holiday, so local lawyers accept congratulations on Law Day – May 1. On February 3, International All Lawyers Day is celebrated.
Congratulations
Trying to please lawyers is not an easy task. First of all, it is worth writing a competent official congratulatory letter. Do not forget to list all the lawyer’s achievements, awards and successes over the past year and emphasize their importance and indispensability. Lawyers will be especially happy if no one bothers them about work issues during their professional vacation. A light joke and the inclusion in specialized terminology will not leave any Themis server indifferent. Try to start your congratulations with the following wording: “I wish you substantial enrichment and personal non-property benefits!” Translated from legal terms, we are talking about love and excellent earnings.
What to give for Lawyer’s Day
Pen
This office element will never be superfluous, especially if the lawyer frequently travels to courts and authorities. Pay attention to objects that are not too heavy and of noble shades. An engraving with a memorable inscription will add a special charm.
Profile literature
Law develops at lightning speed, which is why the legal profession is synonymous with daily development. Select the latest books on the industry in which the lawyer practices. It will be especially pleasant to receive as a gift an edition of the main law of the country – the Constitution of the Russian Federation.
Public speaking training
To delicately counter in court, successfully argue with colleagues and clearly explain your position to clients, you need to learn to speak clearly and beautifully. Even for an experienced lawyer, developing this skill will not hurt.
Anti-stress
The legal profession can hardly be considered calm and simple. That’s why scented headache sachets, stress balls, or Newton balls would make great gifts. And try to worry the lawyers less next year. They will be very happy about this.
Massager
Sedentary work and stress have a detrimental effect on health. It is worth considering options for compact massagers for shoulders, head and even eyes. They can be used during a break right at your desk.
