Electricity companies are calling for greater public-private collaboration to install electric vehicle charging points, whose deployment has slowed down in the last year, they say, due to “the lack of agility” in license approvals.

In a meeting held this Tuesday, the president of the Association of Electrical Energy Companies (Aelec), Marina Serrano, pointed out that this year some 5,000 charging points of up to 50 kilowatts of power have been installed in Spain, which occupies Seventh place in Europe in this type of installations.

The lack of agility in the approval of building permits or opening permits for facilities is being a stumbling block, according to Marina Serrano, who has highlighted the importance of having more charging points so that there is confidence when it comes to buy an electric vehicle and meet the objective of the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC). The PNIEC contemplates that in 2030 5 million electric vehicles will circulate in Spain.

Furthermore, the president of Aelec has said that aid for the installation of charging points “continues to arrive late”, at the same time that she has pointed out that investments are being held back by the lack of information about the needs of the electrical network and the consumers.

Serrano has said that measures such as the new circular on access and connection of demand from the National Commission of Markets and Competition (CNMC) will allow greater flexibility and simpler procedures, which open “a new field” for an electrical network. which was never intended to make charging points of up to 330 kilowatts and for which the facilities “are not prepared.”

Charging points blocked

The deadlines for the installation of charging points continue to lengthen and, for example, in the case of Cepsa, of 400 projects, 300 are pending the relevant permits, 100 have been granted licenses and it is expected that a total of 80 They will be operational by the end of the year, although so far only 10 are operational.

The Mobility Director of this company, Isabel Gorgoso, has explained that the activity of the charging points is not profitable nor will it be in the coming years, largely because it has not been possible to comply with the mandatory installations in the two years that The project is in process given the absence of permits.

According to the Business Association for the Development and Promotion of Electric Mobility (Aedive), in Spain there are 27,420 operational public access charging points, 27.1% more than there were at the end of 2022, which was 21.57 3.
