The parents and their 16-year-old sister were found without signs of life in the first days after the landslide. Search crews are searching for a third child and a neighbor who are missing, according to Tim DeSpain, spokesman for the Alaska Department of Public Safety.

The landslide affected three homes near Wrangell, a fishing town of about 2,000 people on an island about 250 kilometers south of Juneau. Authorities used trained dogs and an excavator to search for and recover the remains. Photos on social media show the aftermath of the landslide, which occurred during heavy rain and strong winds, including a 135-meter-wide muddy path leading from the top of a nearby mountain to the ocean amid lush trees of Evergreen. The landslide covered the coastal road before reaching the sea.
