Throughout the entire Formula 1 season, we rate drivers on their Grand Prix performance and, at the end of the championship, we traditionally summarize the results. Previously we talked about the runners at the bottom of the table, and now it’s the leaders’ turn.

Pérez is among the main disappointments of the season:

The 12 worst Formula 1 drivers of the 2023 season. Including the winner of two races.

10. Liam Lawson (6.8 GPA / 34 overall)

Red Bull had no plans to include Lawson in Formula 1: the New Zealander, who had previously been exiled to Super Formula, ended up in Alpha Tauri only after Ricciardo’s injury. And Liam took advantage of the opportunity brilliantly: he passed the test in Zandvoort, started the race without knowing the car, was one step away from the top 10 at Monza and Suzuka, and in Singapore, on a completely unfamiliar city track, he took ninth place. Five races were enough for the rookie to make a good impression, and his return in 2025 seems inevitable.

9. Carlos Sainz (6.8/150)

In the 2022 season – 9th (average score – 6.7).

In the 2023 season, Sainz was the only one who was able to interrupt Red Bull’s dominance for at least one day. In Singapore, Carlos looked great and at the right time got the most out of the car from the start of the weekend. Then it even seemed that the Spaniard could eclipse Leclerc and become Ferrari’s informal leader. But it didn’t work: Sainz lost seven qualifyings in a row to Charles, again seemed slower than his teammate, and ended the season with an extremely incomprehensible performance in Abu Dhabi.

8. Oscar Piastri (7.2/158)

Piastri has become the best rookie in Formula 1 in the last four years, since Russell, Norris and Albon entered the championship. The Australian met almost all the expectations of the paddock and quickly got used to driving a new vehicle. At the end of the season, Oscar even began to overtake Norris from time to time in the standings, although in long stretches he was still inferior to his more experienced teammate. One way or another, it is already evident that the Australian has a great future in the “Grand Prix”.

7. Alejandro Albón (7.3/159.5)

In the 2022 season – 10th (6.4).

For the second year in a row, Albon practically only carried Williams, and this year Alex earned seventh place for the once-champion team. Grove had not risen this much in the Constructors’ Championship since 2018’s memorable failure by the Russian fans. The car didn’t always allow the Thai to shine, however, he has some truly outstanding performances to his name, and now Albon will surely be on the short lists of the top teams if one of them needs a new driver.

This time, without bold decisions:

The Formula 1 driver lineup for 2024 is fully formed. And he is unique!

6. George Russell (7.3/160.5)

In the 2022 season – 6th (7.3).

Russell describes last season with the word “catastrophe”: the most memorable this year were his crash in Monaco, his crash into the wall in Canada and his loss of the podium in Singapore due to an accident. On the other hand, George was once again very fast and, because of the team, he missed a couple of podiums: in Australia his engine burned out and in Qatar he had to make his way after Hamilton’s mistake. Furthermore, the Briton did not lose to the former champion in the qualification duel and once again confirmed that he is capable of fighting with the best.

5. Lewis Hamilton (7.4/162.5)

In the 2022 season – 5th (7.6).

Hamilton, apart from the already mentioned Qatar Grand Prix, this year did not allow himself any madness and in the races, for the most part, he squeezed the maximum of his capabilities from the available equipment. However, this did not always happen and, in qualifying, Lewis crashed from time to time and, unlike his teammate, could not control the car. This was the case, for example, in Singapore, the only race of the year in which the rivals had the opportunity to overtake Red Bull. Generally, more is expected from the record holder for the number of pole positions.

4. Lando Norris (7.4/163.5)

In the 2022 season – 4th (7.6).

Norris had similar problems. In the races, Lando worked brilliantly with the tires and showed impressive progress, but made mistakes at crucial moments in qualifying. One of them, for example, cost the Briton the opportunity to compete with Verstappen in Qatar. However, despite this and the unfortunate start in Las Vegas, Norris remains one of the top talents on the grid; When they say McLaren may have a chance to challenge Red Bull, they’re usually referring to Lando.

3. Charles Leclerc (7.5/165.5)

In the 2022 season – 2nd (8.0).

For Leclerc, last season seemed to consist of two parts. In the first, Charles, trying at all costs to jump over his head, occasionally crossed the line and made mistakes (Melbourne, Miami, Zandvoort). But in the second, the driver was able to recover and finished the championship strongly. Even against the background of the problems that arose in qualifying in Monza and Singapore, the Monegasque confidently outperformed his teammate in the intra-team duel (15:7) and retained his status as Ferrari’s unofficial number one.

The most interesting thing about the last championship:

“Supergrandfather” Alonso and 4 more moments that brightened the boring Formula 1 season

2. Fernando Alonso (8.0/177)

In the 2022 season – 3rd (7.8).

Alonso became a true Aston Martin locomotive this year and with all his strength pushed Lawrence Stroll’s team forward. At the start of the season, the car allowed him to regularly place on the podium and Fernando was in the top three six times in the first eight races. The former Spanish champion has not been at his best all year, he made mistakes in Barcelona and Singapore, and experienced problems in Mexico City and Las Vegas. However, if Aston Martin had the opportunity to win the race, Alonso would hardly have missed it.

1. Max Verstappen (9.0/198)

In the 2022 season – 1st (8.8).

The world champion had an exceptional season and was very good even in his worst races. Max’s biggest mistake this year was the start in Las Vegas, but even there Verstappen recovered from the penalty and won. Despite the complete lack of competition, the Dutchman remains in incredible shape and continues to improve: in 2022 he had inexplicable setbacks or moments of loss of concentration, but not in 2023. What will happen next season?
