The investigation established that in March 1989, the prisoner and two of his friends killed two 17-year-old girls in Losiny Ostrov who had arrived in the capital that day from Estonia.
Then it was not possible to quickly solve the crime, but the DNA found on the clothes of the dead helped to identify 57-year-old Dmitry Zakharov.
Zakharov, who was repeatedly convicted, strangled one of the girls, the second victim was murdered by his friends, detectives found out.
The court sentenced Zakharov to 16 years in a maximum security colony. Two of his accomplices died in 1999 and 2012.
