Ukraine’s Economy Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko announced that the country has filed legal claims against Poland, Slovakia and Hungary at the World Trade Organization (WTO) over the ban on imports of Ukrainian grain. The unilateral restrictions go against the decision of the European Union (EU) which, on Friday, the 15th, rejected extending the ban on Ukrainian products that had been in force since May in the three countries, in addition to Bulgaria and Romania.
According to Svyrydenko, the ban on Ukrainian agricultural products already causes “significant” losses to exporters, who face stoppages, additional costs and the impossibility of complying with foreign trade agreements.
For the country, maintaining the restrictions unilaterally is “a violation of the international obligations of these three European Union countries”, said the note.
Furthermore, “all member countries of the bloc must coordinate and harmonize their trade policy, as this is the exclusive competence of the EU”, he added.
Despite the measure at the WTO, the minister stated that she hopes that countries will remove the restrictions so that the issue does not go to court.
