“Life is worth it, even when the world seems to crumble beneath our feet. To do this, we must use our dreams to spice up existence and our pains to build us, not to destroy us.” This thought by psychiatrist Augusto Cury, one of the most read contemporary writers, gives just a taste of what the public can expect from the dramatic comedy “Never give up on your dreams”.
The play proposes a journey towards self-knowledge. It invites reflection on life and the need for guidance when faced with self-sabotaging issues, in addition to the interpretation of dreams. On stage, Maximiliana Reis and Nizo Neto, the protagonists, experience emotions, ranging from laughter to anguish, sharing messages of resilience, motivation and hope in the search for happiness, even when everything seems to be wrong.
Touring Brazil for almost a year, the play has been moving audiences wherever it goes. “It has comedy, it has emotion and it motivates the viewer not to give up on their dreams, their ambitions and their feelings”, says director Rogério Fabiano. With more than 40 years of career in theater and on the small screen, Rogério acted in the soap operas “Os Mutantes” (2009) and “Prova de amor” (2006), both on Record; and in theater he stars in the play “Allan Kardec”, touring Brazil for over ten years, and is the director of the plays “Louca para amar” and “Rainha Ester”.
“We must scream in silence that the best days are yet to come, face the saddest periods in life not as full stops, but as commas to continue writing our trajectory”, points out Cury, who adapted the text for the theater alongside Ingrid Zavarezzi.
The plot tells the story of Carol, a 60-year-old psychologist played by actress Maximiliana Reis, who lives at war with her daughter, a typical representative of Generation Z, aged 16, spoiled and addicted to social media. Using Dr. Cury’s methodology, Carol is successful in treating her patients, however, she is unable to apply it to resolve personal issues. The story also mixes fiction with facts. Passages from Cury’s own life, Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King and Jesus Christ illustrate the production.
In addition to Carol, other characters make up the plot: Breno, played by Nizo Neto, is a failed entrepreneur who fights against the stigma of being a loser; at 80 years old, a lady who gave up on life; a secretary, in her 35s, dreams of being a mother, but, as she is living in an interracial marriage, she is afraid of raising a black child in a prejudiced society; a 32-year-old medical student who thinks about dropping out because he doesn’t agree with the faculty’s doctrine; and a teenager, 12, who hates studying and begins to question life and the future.
Never Give Up on Your Dreams talks about the importance of dreaming with discipline, “taking control of life, understanding that our personal universe is not an island and that this applies to all generations. Great figures in history experienced the same doubts and problems that we experience today”, details author and screenwriter Ingrid. In her 25-year career, Ingrid has collected works on TV, theater and the web. Highlights include the authors of the Multishow series “Beijo me liga”, winner of the Converge Mobile Marketing award; for “Malhação Conectados” (Globo); and for the teen comedy channel, “Planeta das geminhas”, with millions of views. She also received the IATEC/SENAC/TV Globo Profissão Entretenimento award in the Screenplay category.
Touring Brazil with the show, Nizo Neto has received positive feedback from people, both online and in person. The audience sees themselves in his character Breno. In fact, he identifies himself. “He’s that guy who goes through a lot of things that a lot of people go through, right! Which is the problem of self-esteem and the ups and downs of life. A man who prepared himself, studied and who, now, is doing what he doesn’t like, having to live where he doesn’t want to, because life has put him in this situation. In a way, I identify with him, because the life of an artist is full of ups and downs. It’s the difficulty of overcoming difficulties, facing what you’re going through and asking for help, in this case, therapy. I’ve been going to therapy for many years and it helps a lot, a lot,” he reveals.
On stage, Nizo also impersonates Augusto Cury. “Playing Cury is a privilege and a challenge. Because he is an incredible man and because I, very used to doing comedy, play him a serious character. Breno, for example, has a more comical feel and such, but this is a serious character, which shows a different side of me as an actor”, says Nizo.
