A student at the Faculty of Medicine at Centro Universitário São Camilo, Bruna Rodrigues, 20, claims that she was spat on by students from Unisa (Santo Amaro University) during Calomed, university games that brought together medical faculties during the 28th of April and the 1st May in São Carlos, in the interior of São Paulo.

The attack allegedly occurred while the São Camilo University Center women’s volleyball team was playing against Unisa.

Images of Unisa students naked during a volleyball game were shared on social media over the weekend. After the repercussions of the case, at least seven students identified in the videos were expelled from the institution.

Unisa defines the attitude of the group of students as an “execrable act” and states that it became aware of the “very serious occurrences” this Monday morning (18). When contacted specifically about the spitting case, the university did not respond until the publication of this report.

The atmosphere of tension at the games, according to the São Camilo students, took over the game to the point where the fans entered through different gates and the event organizers provided a cordon to avoid fights between the faculties.

During the match, Bruna was in the stands and ordered food for delivery. When she went in search of the delivery man, she didn’t find him. So, she walked to the entrance where some Unisa students were gathered.

Bruna says she thought the atmosphere was calm, there were security guards around and, therefore, nothing would happen to her. Until two Unisa students approached and spat out a mixture of paint and beer.

She claims she tried to push the students away, but a third came from below and tried to grab her thigh.

It was then that she slapped him and left the place with the help of a friend. “I went green all over,” she says.

The student and a colleague claim that Unisa students have the habit of mixing green paint, the college’s color, and diluting it with beer to make the mixture more pasty. Then, they put the liquid in their mouths and spit it on students from other colleges.

Bruna says the experience scared her. “When the adrenaline went down, I got scared, I started shaking, I thought I might have been beaten.” The young woman also says that the atmosphere of the fans was similar to that of organized football. “It looked like it was Gaviões da Fiel against Mancha Verde.”

On the agenda of university games for medical schools, there is another scheduled for the end of the year.

“I was very upset. I expected that these would be the best days of my life, that I would really enjoy the games”, she laments. “It was supposed to be healthy competitiveness and the students were there to enjoy it, but it was horrible.”

Bruna spoke to reporters this Tuesday afternoon (19) and was with fellow medical student Laura Felix, who confirmed what happened.

The students also claim that they were the target of a mixture of feces and urine that was thrown by Unisa students during the games.

Bruna and Laura state that the climate of tension is not usually repeated at other universities.

They also claim that their college hazing does not follow the histories of aggression that are often reported by students. “When we arrived at college, the hazing was peaceful, they threw flour, beer, that sort of thing, but only those who wanted to participate”, recalls Felix.

Police investigate case in São Carlos

In a statement, the Public Security Secretariat states that, as soon as it learned about the case of students who were naked during university games, it began investigating the case.

The agency said that the Civil Police will send requests to the universities involved and to the São Carlos Sports Department.

The MEC (Ministry of Education) notified the college to provide clarification on what had happened.
In a post published on social media, the athlete from the Unisa medical school stated that the images are not contemporary and that they do not represent “athletic principles and values”.

The president of the athletics, Vittoria Carmona, told the reporter that after the episode an assembly was held before another university competition, Intermed, and it was warned that, if any student “were to take a stance of this nature, they would be expelled from the competition.” .
