A Riachuelo inspector was arrested for illegal harassment and racism after insinuating that a black man had stolen pairs of socks from the store in a shopping mall in Recife.

The victim, a 48-year-old administrative assistant, bought a package of socks at the Riachuelo store in the RioMar shopping mall, in the south of Recife, on September 6th.

As soon as he left the retailer, he was stopped by a store employee and accused of stealing. The employee in question is white, the victim’s defense informed UOL.

“In an assertive manner, the loss prevention inspector says: ‘Lift your shirt and take out the package of socks that is in your pocket’. This denotes that he was already being observed inside the store. He believes that the approach, this persecution, was due to racial reasons”, said Kleber Freire, the victim’s lawyer, to UOL.

The assistant then showed that he had nothing in his pockets other than papers and presented the invoice for the socks he had purchased, worth R$19.90, according to information in the police report.

The inspector, a 33-year-old man, was taken to the Boa Viagem Police Station and charged with racism, according to the Civil Police.

He underwent a custody hearing and will be released, according to the victim’s defense.

To UOL, Riachuelo informed that it “repudiates any and all discriminatory acts” and said that it remains available to continue collaborating with the authorities.

RioMar shopping mall stated that it was aware of the complaint, that the parties themselves contacted the authorities and that it is available to help clarify the episode.
