The almost complete skeleton of a 150 million year old dinosaur will be sold at an auction in Paris, France, scheduled for next month. Barry, as the dinosaur was named, is expected to raise up to 1.2 million euros (around R$6.3 million) in the sale that will take place at the Drouot hotel, the headquarters of one of the most traditional auctions in France, on the 20th of October

The bones were discovered in the early 2000s, in the Morrison Formation, in Wyoming, in the United States, a region considered rich in a high concentration of fossils. The discovery occurred under the direction of paleontologist Barry James – who was later honored with the dinosaur’s naming.

Barry is an adult specimen of Camptosauridae, measuring 2 meters high and 5 meters long, belonging to the Iguanodontidae family, one of the first groups of dinosaurs discovered. Several theories differed about the representation of these animals. Paleontologists clashed throughout the 19th and 20th centuries over their mode of locomotion, questioning whether they were bipedal or quadrupedal. Later, it was understood that they walked on two legs.

Almost 80% of the skeleton’s bones are original, with an exceptional quality of the skull, more than 90% preserved, which is complete and has teeth. According to the auction house, which has previously sold the triceratops Big John (2021), the “living room dinosaur” Zephyr (2022) and the allosaurus Big Sara (2020), this makes Barry among the most complete dinosaurs ever auctioned in the world.
