This Thursday morning (21), the Civil Police of the Federal District (PCDF) dismantled a cybercriminal group that attempted to defraud the electoral process for the position of Guardian Councilor in the Federal District.
According to investigations, cybercriminals invaded the website of the company in charge of organizing the public competition for the position in question.
Investigations revealed that, after hacking into the accounts of certain contestants, most of whom were running for re-election, the hackers began entering false information into the designated fields, with the aim of prematurely eliminating these candidates and preventing them from advancing to the third stage. of the electoral process.
The third phase involves the election through direct, secret and optional voting, under the responsibility of the Council for the Rights of Children and Adolescents of the Federal District (CDCA/DF).
The competition for the selection of guardianship counselors is scheduled for October 1, 2023, from 9 am to 5 pm, and voters will cast their votes confidentially at the voting locations designated by the election organizing committee.
Operation Degola resulted in the execution of three search and seizure warrants in the city of Santa Maria, DF. All seized cyber material will be analyzed by the Computer Expertise Section of the PCDF Criminalistics Institute.
The investigation process was conducted in collaboration with the Cyber Crimes Prosecutor’s Office of the Public Ministry of the Federal District and Territories (MPDFT).
Cybercriminals face charges that include false identity (article 307, Penal Code), aggravated hacking of a computer device (article 154, § 2, Penal Code) and criminal association (article 288, Penal Code). If convicted, they could face sentences of up to ten years in prison.
