The president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), stated this Monday, 25th, that the House will not necessarily rush the processing of the so-called mini electoral reform so that the rules come into effect in next year’s municipal elections. According to him, the discussion must be broad and include the country’s political system.
Pacheco spoke to journalists after participating in Fides 2023, an international insurance market event held in Rio de Janeiro this Monday.
According to him, the new electoral rules need to fill gaps in the legislation, but this requires a deeper discussion.
“We will not approve this in a hurry, or else pressed by the time constraints of having to approve it by October 6th, to be valid in time for the next election,” said Pacheco.
According to the president of the Senate, if it is not possible to approve the text within this period, the House will hold a longer discussion, with a view to making the rules valid in the 2026 elections.
The mini-reform, approved by the Chamber of Deputies, relaxes the rules for accountability and the application of fines to political parties and candidates.
Last week, Pacheco criticized changes to electoral rules on the eve of the deadline for them to be valid for the 2024 elections.
This Monday, the president of the Senate also said that it is necessary to discuss points of the Brazilian political system, such as the very institute of re-election for positions in the Executive branch. “I ask: was the institution of reelection in the Executive good for the country or not? I tend to believe not,” he commented, stating that the party leaders in the Senate have a similar vision to his.
