A new pharmacy was opened, this Monday (18), at the Hospital da Região Leste (HRL – Paranoá) to respond to emergencies. The unit was opened strategically and should help emergency room (ER) teams to speed up patient care.

Previously, PS teams had to travel to the Hospital Pharmacy Unit to pick up medications. Now, the satellite pharmacy provides nearby stock for pickup, reducing team traffic throughout the hospital and reducing patient waiting times.

The head of the Eastern Region Planning Advisory, Alberto Sabala, explains that an HRL employee can walk more than six kilometers per 12-hour shift within the hospital and that most of this movement is between the emergency room and the pharmacy. “In addition to reducing this traffic, satellite units allow for better inventory management and interaction between teams, bringing pharmacists closer to other members of multidisciplinary teams.”

Benefit to patients

The reduction in waiting time for patients is one of the highlights in the assessment of the nursing supervisor at HRL’s Adult Emergency Room, Leilane Marques da Mata. “We waste a lot of time between picking up medications at the (central) pharmacy and resuming patient care,” she says. Another benefit of the satellite pharmacy is that it also allows more control over psychotropic medications, which are now more accessible to the team.

“The forecast is for an improvement in the workflow, avoiding queues and overloads”, reinforces the head of HRL Hospital Pharmacy, Negi da Luz. The request to open the pharmacy unit in the emergency room was made in April this year and completed in September.

The hospital – which is a reference for the residents of Paranoá, Itapoã, São Sebastião and Jardim Botânico – serves, on average, 390 patients per day in the emergency room, including urgent and emergency medical clinics, orthopedics, gynecology and obstetrics, pediatrics and general surgery. There are 41 beds, including a red room (for more serious patients) and mixed adult and children’s wards, as well as precautionary beds, intended for patients who need extra care, for example, in cases of infection with multi-resistant bacteria.

‌‌The existing Hospital Pharmacy Unit at HRL will continue to operate to meet the demands of hospitalized patients. The work routine at the site involves separating and checking the medications requested by the medical teams. “We separate them individually and each cart goes to its respective floors. This is done once a day, so that patients will have access to their medications for 24 hours”, reports hospital pharmacist at HRL Tyara Souza.

‌The Eastern Health Region is highlighted in this indicator, proposed by the Regional Management Agreement (AGR). “Today we managed to reach 100% of hospital beds with the implementation of the individualized dose distribution system”, highlights Alberto Sabala.
