More than 1,200 children under the age of five have died from measles and malnutrition in refugee camps in Sudan since May, with tens of thousands of children “on the brink of death” in the war-torn country in the coming months, a UN report says .
The UN has warned about the impact on children’s health of the crisis in Sudan, affected since April by a conflict between the army and paramilitaries.
According to teams from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), more than 1,200 refugee children under the age of five died in nine camps in the period between May 15 and September 14.
These children are refugees from Ethiopia and South Sudan, said Allen Maina, director of Public Health at UNHCR, at a press conference.
“Due to cruel indifference to civilians and persistent attacks on health and nutrition services, UNICEF fears that thousands of newborn babies will have died by the end of the year,” said the spokesperson for the United Nations Fund for Childhood (Unicef), James Elder, to the press in Geneva.
The spokesperson stated that projections indicate that 333,000 children will be born in the African country between October and December.
