The President of the Republic, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, stated in the evening of Wednesday, 20th, that the meeting with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, was the one that “should and needed to happen”. It was the first time that both met in person after a failed attempt during the G7, a group of the richest, in Hiroshima, Japan. Lula said that he listened to what the Ukrainian had to say and that he defended to him the need to build the Peace and a negotiation table to end the war in the country.

“I told him the need to find a group of friendly countries that could make a proposal for neither one nor the other, of the two that are at war. And (these) that negotiation at a table is much cheaper than a war, there are no victims, there are no deaths and there are no shots,” Lula told reporters, leaving the hotel where he was staying in New York.

In this sense, the Brazilian said he suggested the construction of a negotiation table to stop the war. He admitted, however, that it is not an easy path.

“I know it’s difficult for both him and (President of Russia Vladimir) Putin, but I think this is the only path that will find a solution, the path of dialogue, peace, conversation”, stated the president of Brazil “No one will have 100%, no one can win everything. It’s not just the defeat of the enemy. It is the construction of a lasting Peace so that a territorial occupation like Russia never happens again”, said Lula.

Afterwards, the president left the hotel where he was staying in New York, heading to Brazil. He had been in the city since Saturday, 16th, where he came to speak at the opening of the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN).

Meeting with Biden

During his visit to New York, in addition to the first face-to-face meeting with Zelensky, another highlight of the agenda was the bilateral meeting with the President of the United States, Joe Biden, with whom he also launched a global initiative for more dignified working conditions.

The Brazilian president received a request for around 60 bilateral meetings on the margins of the UN General Assembly, 50 of which came from Heads of State and ten from international organizations to which Brazil is a member.

Since taking office, the president has met with heads of government from 55 different countries in less than nine months.
