President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) stated this Tuesday (26) that he will sign a decree to create a strategy program to install internet in schools across the country.

Lula stated that the objective of the program is to connect 138,400 schools by 2026, when his presidential term ends. Part of the resources will come from the 5G auction.

“Today we have signed the decree that establishes a national strategy for connected schools. In other words, we are going to connect 138,400 schools in this country. By 2026, we will leave all our kids highly connected, with Wi-Fi and everything whatever is necessary”, stated the president.

Lula held his traditional live broadcast on the internet this Tuesday morning (26), Conversa com o Presidente. The president was interviewed by journalist Marcos Uchôa.

The transmission had not been carried out in the last two weeks, due to the president’s travels. On Tuesday last week (19), Lula was in the United States, to participate in the UN General Assembly (United Nations).

The previous week, Lula was already in Brasília, but had arrived late from his trip to India for the G20 summit.

Just as he had done in his last broadcast, Lula invited ministers to participate in the Conversation with the President. The strategy was used in the lives of his predecessor, Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

This Tuesday, Camilo Santana (Education) and Nísia Trindade (Health) participated in the broadcast. In the afternoon, the president launches the national strategy for connected schools at an event in Planalto.

According to Camilo, the strategy will define the implementation of broadband in all schools without connectivity. The strategy will determine as a parameter that the installation will need to guarantee a level of 1,000 megabytes per student, to guarantee pedagogical purposes.

The head of Education also added that the resources for implementing school connectivity will come from two sources. One of them will be the 5G auction and the other will be the Fust (Telecommunications Services Universalization Fund).

Lula and Camilo then released some data about the lack of connectivity in the country. The minister stated that a third of schools do not have broadband that could be used for teaching purposes. Furthermore, 40,000 schools do not have access to fixed broadband, with 8,000 not having any type of connectivity.

ICT Education 2022 Survey, released this Monday (25), showed that only 58% of Brazilian primary and secondary schools have computers and internet for students. The survey also shows that only 52% of state schools have more than 50 Mbps speed at their main connection point.
