João Guilherme is in fashion. Known since he was a child for acting in SBT soap operas, he reached the age of 21 with a full beard, parading around in daring looks and showing off his toned chest on social media. He became a Gen Z heartthrob.
Now working as a mix of actor and digital influencer, he says he wants to advance his career. He’s trying to boost his resume with mature characters that still hook his captive audience.
It is with this in mind that he stars in the video “Me Lambe”, by singer Jão, another favorite among the kids. In the recently released video, Guilherme dresses up as a cat and licks the musician’s face. It was enough to set the internet alight for days.
In addition, in recent months he launched the series “De Volta aos 15”, on Netflix, and “Vicky e a Musa”, on Globoplay. Next year, he will play a rich drug addict in the series “Da Ponte pra Lá”, on HBO Max.
On open TV, it has appeared more and more on Globo and less on SBT. Off screen, he signed advertising contracts with brands such as iFood, Volvo and O Boticário.
There has never been so much talk about João Guilherme. But this doesn’t just have to do with her sensuality or the professional advancement she has experienced.
What made him the most popular topic, in fact, was wearing a crop top at Paris Fashion Week in June. He chose an off-white model, with long sleeves, closed with buttons, which left a few centimeters of his belly exposed. He posed with a bag on his left shoulder and a fan in his right hand.
It was enough to start a debate on the internet about agender fashion, that is, the use of genderless clothing.
Former BBB and comedian Nego Di published a video on Instagram mocking the look. “What a shame. You don’t need that perfume to get your ass off. You dress like a dog,” he said. The video was shared by actor Rafael Cardoso, a Globo soap opera star.
“It’s laughing to keep from crying. I was in disbelief”, says Guilherme, stretched out on a beach chair in the backyard of a studio in São Paulo. “Nego Di calls himself a comedian, but he’s not funny at all. A comedy that, God forbid, can inspire someone.”
“I wasn’t going to be on stage at all. But Rafael’s repost got me,” he continues. “He’s a professional colleague who should understand freedom of expression. Dressing up as a character is the same as wearing a crop top. So I decided to take a stand”, he says.
At the height of the buzz, Guilherme published on his Instagram profile the headlines of four news stories about LGBTQIA+ people who were attacked and killed. He shared profiles of institutions that welcome people from the community, such as Casa 1, in São Paulo.
“Clothes size and length don’t say anything about my sexual orientation or my gender identification,” he says.
His interest in fashion began when he started skateboarding at age 11. In an attempt to fit in with the other skaters, he ditched the tight-fitting pants and bought loose-fitting t-shirts.
At the age of 15, the actor traveled the country on tour with the cast of the soap opera “Cúmplices de um Resgate”.
Inspired by Justin Bieber and Jaden Smith, he wore a skirt in one of the performances. And he liked it. From then on, he became a fan of agender fashion. “Today my t-shirts are shorter. It’s not because I stopped skateboarding or because I like kissing boys. Agender fashion is part of fashion like jeans and leather are. It’s just that your head isn’t the size of your ball.”
The actor says he feels like a mannequin when his looks cause controversy. “They say ‘damn, this generation is lost’, but no, my love. Back in the 1990s, there were rockers with makeup and painted nails,” he says.
Bold clothing is part of João Guilherme’s image construction, says Rafael Nascimento, director of the Another Place brand. He, who took the actor to parade in crop tops for the brand at São Paulo Fashion Week last year, says he sees Guilherme as a good channel for genderless clothes to reach the masses.
Guilherme, who claims to be heterosexual, attributes his proximity to the LGBTQIA+ community to the recording sets. They are spaces populated by the community and where you learn to respect others, in his words.
The actor was seven years old when he was invited by a family colleague to audition for the short film “Vento”, from 2009. It was his first job as an actor. Years later, he starred with José de Abreu in the film “Meu Pé de Laranja Lima” (2013).
It was because of a Children’s Day photo shoot published in a magazine that an SBT casting producer found Guilherme. She sympathized with the boy’s image and invited him to audition for the children’s series “Accomplices in a Rescue”.
It worked out. Guilherme stayed at the station from 13 to 17 years old. He recorded two seasons of “Cúmplices” and the soap opera “As Aventuras de Poliana”, in which he was a romantic partner with actress Larissa Manoela, who was also his girlfriend in real life. During this period, he was also cast in the films “Tudo por um Popstar” and “Fala Sério, Mãe”.
Son of country singer Leonardo, one of the most famous in Brazil, Guilherme grew up studying at a private school, studying English and playing sports – all financed by the pension sent by his father, according to him.
Guilherme was raised by his mother, entrepreneur Naira Ávila. He spent little time with his father, who used to meet him when he did shows in São Paulo.
“It didn’t make sense to go live with him, as he had a much more active and crazy life, and other children too”, he says. “Today we have to organize our agendas. We make it fit, but we know what our priorities are. He has his all over Brazil.”
The two were involved in a raid last year. Guilherme criticized Leonardo on the internet after the singer visited Jair Bolsonaro in Brasília to support the former president at a press conference. “This country can never change the colors of the flag”, said the country singer, alongside fellow Bolsonarista singer Gusttavo Lima.
Guilherme says he felt disgusted when he saw the video. At the time, the actor posted on Twitter that his father was blind. “I apologize for my father’s lack of education and sensitivity,” he wrote.
As a result, the actor decided to use his own social networks to support current president Lula, of the PT. “The internet has functionality to exchange ideas, change opinions and have this exchange that makes a difference in some way. It’s not just for posting shirtless photos. It would be desperate to have four more years of that government.”
His desire to get involved in politics was strengthened by his relationship with his uncle and manager Pe Lu, from the band Restart. “With the upbringing, life and privileges we have, it seems natural to me that we would take a stand against (the government)”, says the musician.
Guilherme guarantees that everything is going well in his relationship with Leonardo nowadays. The actor traveled to Goiânia in July to celebrate the singer’s 60th birthday. “It doesn’t change anything. There’s no way to hate and stop loving your family no matter how much you dislike and fight against their opinion.”
