The last week of winter will be marked, according to meteorologists, by an intense heat wave that is expected to hit most of the country. The explanation is that an atmospheric blockage will prevent the arrival of cold fronts in the coming days, thus raising temperatures. In Rio de Janeiro, temperatures can reach 40ºC, with the peak being reached on Sunday (24).
For this Tuesday (19), the temperature is expected to vary between 36°C and 18°C, with light winds and no cloud cover. Wednesday (20) should follow the same pattern, reaching a maximum of 35°C and a minimum of 17°C, with clear skies and no rain forecast.
According to the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet), there may be a decrease in temperature on Wednesday with the possibility of isolated rain the following day. The heat should return on Friday (22), with temperatures above 30°C.
In addition to the heat, a drop in relative air humidity can be recorded, between 20% and 12%, in some locations. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the ideal humidity for health should be between 50% and 60%.
Dangers and symptoms
To avoid cases of heatstroke and dehydration due to high temperatures and low air humidity, care must be taken. In both cases, the symptoms are similar: headaches, dizziness, nausea, hot and dry skin, cramps, rapid pulse, high temperature, visual disturbances and mental confusion. When presenting these signs, the person should ask for help, try to cool their body in a place protected from the sun and, if possible, put their feet up.
Care
On these days of extreme heat, Alerta Rio recommends avoiding closed environments, crowds and outdoor exercise between 11am and 4pm. The Rio Operations Center (COR) and the Municipal Health Department of Rio de Janeiro advise, on their social networks, to drink plenty of fluids; eat fruits, vegetables and vegetables; use of serum to moisturize nose and eyes; use sunscreen and wear light clothing during the week, in addition to keeping environments ventilated.
