The Ministry of Women repudiated this Monday (18) the attitude of the medical students at the Santo Amaro University (Unisa), in São Paulo, who were naked and touched their genitals during a volleyball game that was played by women. Through a post on social media, the ministry said that “attitudes like that of Unisa medical students can never be normalized – they must be combated with the rigor of the law”.
“Breaking centuries of a misogynistic culture is a constant task that requires a careful look at all types of gender-based violence,” the ministry wrote. “In partnership with the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Women reinforces its commitment to confront these practices that limit or make it impossible for students to participate as citizens. Let’s continue working to make universities safe spaces, free from violence.”
This weekend, videos and photos of medical students running naked and touching their private parts while a women’s volleyball game was taking place went viral on social media. The videos show students with their pants down while the Unisa women’s volleyball team played against students from Centro Universitário São Camilo.
The Minister of Justice and Public Security, Flávio Dino, said this Monday (18) that the episode is “repulsive, undesirable and absurd”, but explained that national security forces can only act if there is a failure in the state system. “This situation is repudiated and rejected. But functional action in this case can only occur if the state police eventually becomes inactive, as it is a crime between private individuals. The functional attribution initially belongs to the Civil Police of the state of São Paulo”, explained Dino at a press conference.
According to Centro Universitário São Camilo, the event took place between April 28th and May 1st this year, during Calomed (a university event that brings together medical students). This year, the event was held in São Carlos, in the interior of São Paulo. In a statement, the institution reported that students from its Medicine course participated in the event and played a game against the Unisa team.
“The students of that University (Unisa), having emerged victorious, according to collected reports, celebrated by running naked around the court. At that time, no complaints were registered by our students regarding sexual harassment”, informed São Camilo, in a note.
“The Centro Universitário São Camilo – SP expresses solidarity and support for its students and repudiates any acts that may harm women and human dignity. We believe that modesty and good customs must prevail, especially when it comes to academic environments, where the training of new and good professionals is the greatest commitment to society,” she added.
Also through a note, published on its social networks, the José Douglas Dallora Academic Athletic Association (AAAJDD), from the Santo Amaro University, said that the images that circulated through the media “are not contemporary” and “do not represent the principles and values preached by AAAJDD”. “We do not tolerate or condone any act of abuse or discrimination. Thus, athletes, fans, technical staff and everyone involved in our competitions and events are, by us, always encouraged to behave based on ethical and social principles in which respect, inclusion and equality prevail”, wrote the association, in note.
The Rubens Monteiro de Arruda Academic Center (Carma), at the Santo Amaro Faculty of Medicine, repudiated the attitudes demonstrated in the videos that are circulating in the media. “Such feats are a setback for our university and, therefore, do not represent our beloved home,” he commented.
The National Union of Students (UNE) also spoke out about the episode and repudiated the attitude of Unisa students. “Disrespect and objectification of women are unacceptable in any sector of the university. Unisa needs to take a stand and those involved must be held criminally responsible”, wrote UNE. “We need to combat the sexist culture that is present inside and outside our universities,” he added.
