Globo went to court and carried out an operation against the page Carol Novelas, which sells around 500 complete Brazilian soap operas on the internet for fans of the genre. The broadcaster’s lawyers say that Leandro da Silva Evangelista, owner of the website and target of the action, is “the biggest soap opera pirate” in the country due to the robustness of what he offers. Even rare plots that are not on streaming are sold.
The report had access to the action documents, which are being held jointly in the 8th Civil Court and the 1st Business Court of the TJ-SP (Court of Justice of São Paulo).
On the website, Evangelista says that he has a collection of several plots from all broadcasters. In addition to Globo, some foreign productions are available, and from other TVs, such as SBT, Record, Band, and the extinct Rede Manchete (1983-1999).
Even the pioneer Tupi, the first Brazilian broadcaster, has a soap opera in its catalogue. The plot in question is “Seagulls” (1979), one of his last productions, before going off the air in 1980.
The variety and quantity of items in the collection impressed Globo’s lawyers, who carried out sweeps to take down the content, which was made illegally available on the internet, and which violates copyright legislation. For the customer to have access to the collection, Leandro charges a single fee of R$220.
As soon as the amount is paid, the Carol Novelas team, made up of three people, sends the interested party a file on Google Drive that entitles them to any production they want. The report managed to access the content. The image quality is high, even in older soap operas from the 1980s and 1990s.
MISSED FAILURE AND SUCCESSES IGNORED BY GLOBOPLAY
Globo drew attention to the fact that Evangelista has productions that are currently only in the broadcaster’s archives. This is the case of “Olho no Olho”, a 1993 soap opera starring Tony Ramos. She talked about paranormal beings who had special powers, like a prelude to “Os Mutantes” (2008), from Record. The plot gained a satanist reputation at the time and was never repeated or made available.
Another example is “O Amor Está no Ar” (1996), the first soap opera starring Rodrigo Santoro in his career, and considered a huge failure in Globo’s six o’clock slot. The production had as one of its arguments extraterrestrials and the possible existence of life outside Earth. His performance was so bad that it ended early.
Also in the catalog in full is “De Corpo e Alma” (1992), Gloria Perez’s first solo soap opera on Globo’s prime time and marked by the murder of her daughter, actress Daniella Perez (1970-1992), by her colleague casting, the actor Guilherme de Pádua (1969-2022).
But the catalog is not just about lost or failed plots. Forgotten hits are there too. This is the case with the first version of “Ti Ti Ti”, dated 1985 and signed by Cassiano Gabus Mendes. A public phenomenon at the time, the serial has not been re-aired by Globo since 1988. Globoplay only has the remake of the production, which aired in 2010.
Another example of success that is on the page and is not on Globoplay is “Hipertension”, a 1987 production at seven o’clock that was never re-aired on Globo. Written by Ivani Ribeiro (1922-1995), the same author of “A Viagem” (1994), the plot has the peculiarity of having Cesar Filho, currently a journalist and presenter at Record, in one of its main roles.
Plots that are currently airing, such as “Terra e Paixão”, and the recently completed “Vai na Fé” (2023) are also available.
GLOBO ASKS FOR MONEY AND WITHDRAWAL
To punish Evangelista, Globo asked for his immediate removal from the air and for him to be prevented from selling the catalog he has, which the broadcaster considered “unfair competition”. The company is asking for compensation of R$100,000 for moral damages.
When contacted by the report, Globo says it does not comment on ongoing legal cases. The report tried to contact the Carol Novelas blog via the email provided by the page. Two messages were sent, with no response.
