This Tuesday morning (19), the Coordination for the Repression of Crimes Against Consumers, Intangible Property and Fraud (Corf) launched Operation Almoeda, aiming to dismantle a group specialized in holding false online auctions. This gang, which operated throughout the country, caused significant losses to the victims, estimated at an amount of at least R$3 million in the Federal District alone, where more than 200 incidents were registered against the criminals.
The operation had the support of the Civil Police Criminalistics Institute (PCDF) and officers from the São Paulo Civil Police, demonstrating the scope of the gang’s activities.
According to investigations, criminals created false pages on the internet with the aim of simulating fraudulent vehicle auction operations. Their objective was to induce victims to place bids and deposits into bank accounts belonging to the supposed “auctioneers”.
To gain prominence and attract more victims, fraudulent pages were promoted on digital platforms, aiming to position them above legitimate sites dedicated to auction activity.
Those investigated used deceptive tactics, claiming that their procedures were approved by courts of Justice and, improperly, made use of symbols and brands from various bodies of the Judiciary, seeking to give greater credibility to the fraudulent operations.
Using advanced investigation tools, it was possible to identify the administrators of the main site and demonstrate that the criminal group had connections with 10 other fraudulent online auction sites in several states, including Paraná, São Paulo, Santa Catarina, among others.
During the operation, two search and seizure warrants were executed in the city of Santo André (SP). During the searches, investigators seized electronic devices and various documents related to illicit activities.
