Another action in favor of the anti-rabies vaccination campaign for dogs and cats was promoted by the Health Department of the Federal District (SES-DF) this Saturday (23). Animal owners were able to immunize their animals in 65 locations and in Parking 13 at Parque da Cidade.
The campaign, which started in May, runs until September 30th, with several locations available throughout the DF. Today, for example, in addition to the park, teams were stationed in 65 locations. The latest balance shows that the department has already protected 121,498 animals, 101,559 dogs and 19,939 cats.
At Parque da Cidade, in addition to offering vaccines, Environmental Surveillance employees promoted educational activities on the use of leashes, collars and muzzles. The objective is to reach people who have not yet vaccinated their dogs and are enjoying the weekend there.
This is what happened to parliamentary advisor César Kich, who was walking with his daughter and Zeus, a golden retriever. “This action is very good because of its practicality. I didn’t need to look for a position. I was here walking the dog and I resolved this issue (of the vaccine) very easily”, he praised.
The initiative carried out over the weekend is another point of convenience for tutors. “It’s great because it’s Saturday, which is a day when people can bring their pet for a walk and take the opportunity to get vaccinated too. It’s something very important”, highlighted Gilvan Teixeira, who took his dogs Farofa and Scooby to be vaccinated
The use of a leash and muzzle is also important to ensure everyone’s protection, especially against bites and scratches from large dogs. Therefore, members of the DF Environmental Surveillance taught owners the correct way to use these items to avoid accidents.
Campaign coming to an end
A viral disease, rabies affects mammals and can be transmitted to humans through bites, licks and scratches from infected animals. The immunization of animals is essential to prevent the spread of the disease and avoid the contamination of humans with this virus, which has a lethality rate of almost 100%. The rabies vaccine is offered completely free of charge.
“Although we have eliminated the most common variants of the virus in dogs and cats, there is a risk of them becoming infected when biting a bat”, explains the manager of Environmental Surveillance of Zoonoses, Isaías Chianca. “It is very important to vaccinate dogs and cats, because, in addition to protecting your animal, you are protecting your family”, he explains.
