“The decision on whether or not to explore oil is not made by the Ministry of the Environment nor by any ministry alone. It is by the National Energy Policy Council. It is the one that discusses the opportunity and convenience of what the energy matrix and energy security will be like of the country”, said Marina Silva, to journalists, upon arriving at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) event, organized by the National Confederation of Industries (CNI) and the Federation of Industries of the State of São Paulo (Fiesp).
On Sunday, the Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, stated that he is optimistic about the chances of the Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) sitting at the table with Petrobras in the short term to present the environmental conditions for for the state-owned company to begin research for the expected exploratory campaign of the Equatorial Margin, which covers an area from Amapá to Rio Grande do Norte.
The issue caused a split in the government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva after the body denied a request for an exploration license to the oil company.
Marina Silva also said that the decision on oil exploration in the world is not an isolated decision by one country. “Doing without this energy matrix is a global effort in which Brazil can indeed contribute to the clean energy matrix it has, especially by producing green hydrogen, but countries like China, for example, like India, the European Union itself in the context now of war in Ukraine, there is no way to do without this source yet”, he stated.
According to her, the Brazilian government’s effort is to contribute to accelerating towards a clean global energy matrix “Everyone is making an effort and President Lula has already decided that he wants the Brazilian energy matrix to be 100% clean, seeking the alternatives we have in abundance of wind, water, solar, biomass and even being the basis for helping countries that do not have the same comparative advantages as us”, he added.
