Striker Lucas returned to São Paulo with a declared objective: to be champion. The Copa do Brasil title, won this Sunday (24) after beating Flamengo, fulfills this mission for number 7. But now, what is Lucas’ future?
The player agreed to return to the Tricolor São Paulo team on a short, four-month contract, until the end of this season. Lucas was at Tottenham (England), but his contract was not renewed and he was free on the market. The player listened to several proposals, but did not reach any agreement.
Lucas’ contract with the club that revealed him to the world was designed to leave the player free to sign a contract with any other club from January onwards. Could this club be São Paulo? Neither the player nor the Tricolor board rule out this hypothesis.
“I would really like to give that answer, even if it were to say that I’m not going to stay, but I’m not. There are three months, right? It’s about doing my best, taking advantage, making the most of this return, of this club that I love very much , and in January we will see what will happen, we will see what will appear. There is no way to say what it will be, where I will play, I just want to enjoy this moment, in the best way, and there in I will make that decision ahead”, said the attacker in an interview at the beginning of September.
At 31 years old, Lucas’ staff is very careful about the player’s next step. The tendency is for this to be the last major contract of the striker’s career. Athlete, family and staff weigh several variables that include the financial part, yes, but also the quality of life that the player, wife and children will have.
DOES THE TITLE CHANGE THE SCENARIO?
Within the Tricolor board there is great hope that the Copa do Brasil title won and the consequent classification for the Copa Libertadores will make Lucas decide to stay at São Paulo. The player is an undisputed idol at the club, adored by fans on and off the field.
Lucas analyzed offers from the Middle East and the United States before agreeing with São Paulo, but did not reach an agreement. Despite the recent history of great players who returned to Brazil and suffered from pressure from fans and the national football calendar, Lucas’ case seems different given Tricolor’s idolatry and the attacker’s enviable physique.
Whether or not Lucas will remain at São Paulo, even he doesn’t seem to have the answer, but the Copa do Brasil title will only help the number 7 to think even more fondly about the offer to remain at Tricolor in 2024.
