The climate crisis caused by human activity has “opened the gates of hell”, said UN Secretary-General António Guterres this Wednesday (20), at the opening of the Climate Ambition Summit.
Droughts, floods, suffocating temperatures, historic fires, “humanity has opened the gates of hell”, as demonstrated by the “horrible effects of the horrible heat”, said Guterres, in a meeting without the participation of representatives from China and the United States, the two most polluting countries on the planet.
“Climate action is overshadowed by the magnitude of the challenge”, which is why, if there are no changes, the planet will head towards a “dangerous and unstable world”, with a temperature increase of 2.8°C, he warned.
But the future “is not decided, it is up to leaders like you to write it”, said Guterres, who believes that “we can still limit the increase in global temperature to 1.5°C and build a world of clean air, green jobs and clean and accessible energy for all”.
“We must make up for lost time because of the slowness, pressures and greed of entrenched interests who make billions from fossil fuels,” he said.
To this end, it proposes a Climate Solidarity Pact so that the main emitters, who have benefited most from fossil fuels, reduce emissions and support emerging economies to do so.
In its Acceleration Agenda, which demands “climate justice”, it asks governments to accelerate the pace so that developed countries reach net zero emissions as close as possible to 2040, and emerging economies, as close as possible to 2050, he recalled.
“Many of the poorest nations have every right to be angry” because they are the ones “suffering the most from a climate crisis they did not cause”, because they have not received promised funding and because their financing costs “are through the roof” “.
Developed countries must fulfill their commitment of US$100 billion (R$485 billion at current prices) to help countries in the Global South, replenish the Green Climate Fund and double financing for adaptation.
And the entire world must be covered by an early warning system by 2027, as was decided last year, he insisted.
“A Summit will not change the world. But today can be a powerful moment to generate momentum,” he concluded.
