It is no coincidence that the Federal Government is optimistic about the volume of money it will raise once sports betting is regularized in our country.

The amount sent by Brazilians to betting sites abroad in 2023 already exceeds 6.9 billion dollars, equivalent to R$ 33.5 billion at the current price, according to a survey by ‘Aposta Legal Brasil’, an entity created in 2019, operating in six countries.

The data comes from the Central Bank’s balance of payments, referring to the period between January and July this year. The number represents an increase of more than 13 times compared to the US$489 million bet in the first seven months of last year.

Of the total wagered this year, US$1.5 billion was related to remuneration paid to bookmakers located outside the country.

In the same period, Brazil received US$5 billion in remittances that include prizes for winning bets.

For experts, the movement around the regulation of the Brazilian betting market and the increase in publicity on the topic have encouraged a greater volume of contributions. Numbers show an important potential for revenue from taxation.
