Hunter Biden, son of the President of the United States, Joe Biden, sued the Internal Revenue Service (IRS in its acronym in English, equivalent to the Brazilian Federal Revenue Service) this Monday (18). He accuses members of the body of illegally making public information about their financial statements.

Hunter Biden’s businesses have been the subject of accusations at least since the eve of the 2020 election by Republicans, and today they have been under congressional scrutiny for months. Accusations relating to Hunter led to the opening of impeachment proceedings against the president, Joe Biden, made by the leader of the American House, Republican Kevin McCarthy, on the 12th.

Monday’s lawsuit refers to “more than 20 nationally broadcast interviews not authorized by Congress and numerous public statements” made by Gary Shapley, Joseph Ziegler and their lawyers about the president’s son. Shapley and Ziegler testified before Congress as whistleblowers of alleged political interference in an IRS investigation into Hunter’s taxes. The Justice Department denies any such interference.

“(The lawsuit) addresses the decision by IRS employees, their representatives and others to ignore their obligations and repeatedly and intentionally publicly disclose protected information from Mr. (Hunter) Biden’s tax return, outside of the exceptions of such disclosures as provided for by law”, says the action.

Hunter demands $1,000 for each time an unauthorized disclosure was made about his tax return, plus an IRS statement, an agency data security plan, the production of documents related to Biden’s taxes , among other actions.

The Republican-led House Judiciary Committee called the action “intimidation” in a social media post. The Federal Revenue Service did not comment until the publication of this text.

Hunter is at the center of the House president’s decision to impeach Biden Sr. The decision to open the process occurred after the most radical wing of the opposition threatened to remove McCarthy from his post – the group was dissatisfied with the Republican’s stance in negotiations with Democrats to authorize more federal spending and avoid a government shutdown at the end of the month due to lack of of resources.

There is no consensus, however, within the Republican Party on the strategy adopted for the open impeachment process. Many in the opposition fear that, in the end, the attempt to remove Biden from office will strengthen him politically.

Among the Republican accusations are the president’s alleged distorted statements about Hunter’s business and Biden Sr.’s direct participation in conversations and negotiations that would have benefited his son.

The House committee investigating the case has so far found no evidence regarding these and other allegations.

In addition to the investigations in Congress, Hunter has been a defendant since the 14th in a case that accuses him of lying when buying a gun in 2018. According to the accusation, he did not inform that he had problems with drug use, as required by law. This is the first time that the son of a sitting president has been the subject of a criminal charge.

Hunter, 53, black sheep of the Biden family, with problems with the police and justice, is the main target of Republicans in their attempt to weaken Joe Biden, whom they accuse of using the state structure selectively against political opponents – especially after the lawsuits against former president Donald Trump, who is comfortably leading the polls to re-run the 2020 electoral contest with Biden in 2024.
