Moonlight star André Holland, Emmy nominee Zazie Beetz, House of Cards vet Kate Mara, and Tony nominee Stephen McKinley Henderson have joined The Dutchman cast of the upcoming psychological thriller.

The film is based on the acclaimed stage play of the same name. Despite the ongoing strike, production is slated to begin in New York City on September 25; the project was able to obtain a SAG-AFTRA Interim Agreement.

What to expect in The Dutchman?

“Set on a New York subway, the film adaptation centers on an encounter between a well-to-do Black man and an enchanting white woman who match wits in a sexualized game of cat and mouse that leads to a violent conclusion,” reads the synopsis.

The Dutchman will be directed and produced by Andre Gaines (The One and Only Dick Gregory) from a screenplay he co-wrote with Qasim Basir. It will be executive produced by Joshua Blum and Han West, with Jonathan T. Baker producing.

Written by the late Amiri Baraka, the original play was first presented at the Cherry Lane Theatre in Greenwich Village, New York City, in March 1964. It was also adapted into a critically acclaimed 1966 film, which starred Shirley Knight and Al Freeman Jr.
