The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah started after the sudden attack of Hamas in Israel on October 7. In response to the military aggression in Gaza, Hezbollah is carrying out regular attacks on Israel. Israeli forces are also counter-attacking. Many civilians including fighters from both sides were killed.

On July 30, Israel killed Fuad Shukur, the senior military leader of Hezbollah, in an airstrike in Lebanon. Hizbollah warned of taking ‘severe revenge’ for this murder. Not only that, the Lebanese armed group started attacking Israel a few days later.

As a result of that, on Sunday (August 25) there was an attack and counter-attack between the two sides. Dozens of Israeli warplanes attacked southern Lebanon in the early hours of the morning.

According to Israeli forces, Hezbollah was preparing to attack Israel using several rocket launchers. Therefore, they have already launched an air attack on those rocket launchers.

The Israeli military also said it detected at 5 a.m. that Hezbollah was preparing to launch hundreds of rockets into central Israel. Israel’s military-run radio said it was attacked half an hour earlier by 100 Israeli warplanes.

Hizbollah launched an intense attack immediately after Israel’s attack. The armed group said Hezbollah launched rocket and drone attacks on northern Israel in retaliation for the killing of commander Fuad Shukur last month.

Has anyone been hurt?

Lebanon’s NNA news agency reported that one person was seriously injured in a drone attack in southern Lebanon’s Qasimiyah, and a subsequent Israeli airstrike killed one in the Lebanese city of Khiyam. On the other hand, some people were injured in the attack of Hezbollah in the city of Acre in Israel.

Who hit where?

Hezbollah said it hit 11 Israeli military installations, including Israel’s Meron base and four military bases in the occupied Golan Heights. And Israel says it has hit thousands of Hezbollah rocket launchers.

However, Hezbollah denied Israel’s claim that it had hit its rocket launchers. They said Sunday morning’s attack was the first phase of a retaliatory attack on Israel that was successfully completed.

Israel issues security alert for its northern region. It has also declared a state of emergency for the next 48 hours. The important Ben Gurion Airport was closed. However, the situation calmed down after a few hours and the airport reopened.

Why did Hezbollah attack on Sunday?

Sunday is Urbain’s day. Arrabin marks the 40th day of the assassination of Imam al-Husayn, grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, the third Shia Imam. According to a Hezbollah statement, they chose this day for the attack because the day is commemorated as Martyrs’ Day.
